About Baytown

With a population of more than 77,000, Baytown, Texas, is located in the Gulf Coast region of the United States, just east of Houston, the nation's fourth largest city. Those who live and work in Baytown will find an area rich in history, as well as opportunities for outdoor activities due to its proximity to scenic waterways, namely Galveston Bay, the San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou.

Founded in 1919, ExxonMobil's Baytown Complex is located on approximately 3,400 acres along the Houston Ship Channel, about 25 miles east of Houston. Employing a workforce of more than 8,500, it is comprised of four manufacturing sites, including one in nearby Mont Belvieu, and a global technology center. These include the Baytown Refinery, one of the largest refineries in the United States, and the Baytown Olefins Plant, one of the largest ethylene plants in the world.

Its scope of products includes fuels, lube oils, and chemical compounds used in a diverse range of products, from auto battery cases, diapers and tire inner tubes to pharmaceutical uses, food packaging, trash bags and more.

The Baytown area sites are highly integrated, which makes the plants and products more efficient as we develop technologies to make cleaner fuels and work together to operate more safely and reliably.

What role you will play in our team

Our Advanced Manufacturing Engineer (AME) holds a pivotal role in ensuring the seamless operation of all systems within a designated business unit. This position is essential to maintaining reliability, efficiency, and safety across our operations.

Based in Baytown, Texas, the AME drives innovation, and long-term success by tackling complex challenges and spearheading strategic initiatives. Key responsibilities include:

  • Solving intricate unit issues with deep technical insight
  • Leading impactful improvement projects that elevate performance
  • Providing expert reviews of process safety studies to uphold the highest standards
  • Mentoring and coaching, shaping the next generation of engineers through hands-on training and guidance

What you will do

Serve as the Advanced Manufacturing Engineer within the business unit by:

  • Participates on the unit Operations team
  • Proactively identifies issues prior to Operations impact
  • Leads troubleshooting efforts for complex unit problems
  • Organizes resolution of technical issues
  • Leads and/or participates in incident investigation teams
  • Interfaces with external organizations (e.g., Engineering, Technology)
  • Initiates, supports, and champions technically advanced solutions
  • Maintains key interfaces (e.g., EM networks, Research Institutes and Academia, key vendors and suppliers)
  • Provides technical reviews of special unit operations, unit operating changes / projects, and equipment strategies
  • Identifies unit improvement ideas to meet site initiatives (e.g., energy, reliability, cost)
  • Lead the development and implementation of larger improvement projects to support site initiatives
  • Provides technical reviews of process safety studies for the business unit (e.g., HAZOPs, SRRs, LOPAs)
  • Provides consulting on process safety for the unit
  • Shares safety learnings
  • Provides training and mentorship to other engineers
  • Supports the network and associated EM sites
  • Develops and expands technology via partnerships and developmental projects

About you

Skills and Qualifications:

  • B.S. (or higher) degree in Civil, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering
  • 5+ years of industry-related experience
  • Demonstrated design experience
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Capable of working independently and achieving high standards
  • Capable of working with and leading teams effectively
  • Mentor / role model for setting work standards and business ethics
  • Leadership skills to influence Operations team

Preferred Qualifications/ Experience:

  • Experience in Petroleum Refining or Chemical industries or with an industry-adjacent contractor
  • Experience in offsites systems (e.g., flares, storage facilities, shipping, logistics, docks, pipeline)
  • Experience in Engineering support of Utilities operations in a plant man
