The Team

Black & Veatch’s Mission Critical Solution delivers highly reliable, resilient, and secure infrastructure for Federal DoD clients, supporting facilities where power continuity, system redundancy, and mission assurance are essential. We serve clients including USACE, NAVFAC, AFCEC, and other DoD agencies, delivering electrical and power systems for mission-critical facilities such as command centers, data centers, operational facilities, and energy-resilient installations.

Our primary areas of focus are: Architecture/Engineering (A/E) Services, Defense Program, Design/Build, and Classified.

The Opportunity

The Associate Electrical Engineer role is an early career professional opportunity for engineers who have begun to apply their academic foundation in a professional environment. Under general supervision, this professional may contribute to electrical engineering design and analysis for mission critical facilities while continuing to build depth in Federal standards, Mission Critical systems, and Black & Veatch execution practices.

The ideal candidate will be located or willing to relocate to one of the following: Kansas City (Overland Park, KS); D.C. (Arlington, VA); Denver (CO); Atlanta (GA); or Dallas (TX).

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Technical Execution

  • Perform engineering assignments of low to medium complexity using standard engineering principles, established practices, and company design standards.
  • Support the design and documentation of mission critical electrical systems, including:
  • Low voltage power distribution
  • Lighting systems
  • Standby power and reliability-focused infrastructure (under supervision)
  • Prepare engineering deliverables such as drawings, reports, calculations, specifications, and studies of limited to moderate scope.
  • Perform routine research and assist with equipment and material selection.
  • Develop and check basic to intermediate engineering calculations using standard methods (e.g., load summaries, panel schedules, lighting analysis).

Mission Critical & Federal Focus

  • Apply and continue developing knowledge of Federal design standards and workflows, including DoD agency requirements (e.g., USACE, NAVFAC, AFCEC).
  • Support Mission Critical projects involving power reliability, redundancy, grounding, and lightning protection, with guidance from senior engineers.
  • Gain experience with DesignBidBuild and Construction Phase Services projects in the Federal market.
  • Assist with RFIs, submittals, and coordination during design and construction phases, as directed.

Quality, Schedule & Compliance

  • Apply and comply with the Black & Veatch Quality Program for assigned tasks.
  • Understand and adhere to project budget, schedule, and quality requirements.
  • Support continuous improvement and lessons learned efforts within the Mission Critical solution discipline.

Collaboration & Professional Growth

  • Coordinate with other disciplines and project team members under the direction of project leadership.
  • Receive mentoring from more experienced Mission Critical engineers and begin applying knowledge more independently.
  • Participate in Mission Critical solution discipline culture, training, and teambuilding activities.
  • Share developing technical knowledge and lessons learned with peers and project teams.
