Job Summary:
The Associate Risk Manager reports to and supports the Director of Risk Management to administer the Diocese of Austin’s insurance and risk management programs. The diocesan insurance program includes multiples lines of coverage (property, general liability, auto, terrorism, secondary medical, workers’ compensation, cyber, crime, and equipment breakdown—but not health). The position operates under supervision with latitude for the use of independent judgment and initiative.
Ministerial Character

In order to fulfill his mission, the Bishop employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clerics, religious, or lay people). He shares with them the apostolic mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them.
Each position employed in the Diocese of Austin helps to extend the ministry of the Bishop in particular ways as outlined in the job description. Therefore, the employee in this position is closely connected to and assists the Bishop in the performance of his ministry and thereby engages in ministry for the church.
Essential Job Duties:
- As an integral part of your ministry for the Church as carried out in this position, support and uphold the philosophy of Catholic ministry and the mission of the Diocese of Austin in both your professional and personal life.
- Act as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church.
- Continuously grow in your ministry by participating in religious ceremonies, training sessions, and reflection activities as directed.
- Assist with the annual application process for renewing reinsurance policies effective July 1.
- Assist in the support of parishes and Catholic schools working through insurance claims, which requires close collaboration with insurance adjusters, contractors, and insurance company representatives.
- Assist in the calculation of insurance claim reserves and deferred reinsurance receivables.
- Manage the diocese’s special events insurance program, which includes processing all purchase applications.
- Manage certificate of insurance requests with the support of the diocese’s insurance brokerage team.
- Maintain the risk management pages on the diocesan website.
- Compile payroll data and IRS filings in support of the annual workers’ compensation audit.
- Monitor and respond to inbound emails received in the insurance@austindiocese.org inbox.
- Execute outbound email and phone campaigns to parishes and Catholic schools.
- Engage with priests in support of initiative to ensure required minimum auto insurance coverages.
- Update and maintain electronic files by insured location.
- Help coordinate the annual property appraisals with parishes and Catholic schools.
- Launch and coordinate a Parish Emergency Management Roundtable initiative.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the structure and basic teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
- Functional knowledge of commercial insurance including policy language and claims processes.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with an emphasis on the ability to translate complex concepts into everyday language.
- Proven record for providing excellent customer service.
- Ability to thrive in a matrixed organizational structure, which requires deep collaboration with diocesan staff from multiple departments, clergy, parish staff members, Catholic school staff members, contractors/ service providers, and volunteers.
- Exceptional time management skills to dynamically prioritize projects through a recurring annual cycle of critical deadlines.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office—including Access and Teams applications.
- Ability to follow instructions furnished in verbal or written format.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Trainings:
- Undergraduate degree for an accredited college or university in a relevant field of study.
Experience:
- Minimum five (5) years of work experience in insurance, risk management, or a related field(s).
Language Requirement:
- English (proficient in conversing, reading, and writing).
- Spanish (proficient in conversing, reading, and writing). Preferred but not required.
Catholic Requirement:
- Must be a practicing Roman Catholic in good standing.
Licenses/Certifications:
- Valid Texas driver’s license.
- Must maintain compliance with the Diocese of Austin Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) policies throughout the employment period.
