Associate Scientist- In Vitro Neurobiology

What You Will Do

Amgen’s cardiometabolic team is an innovative target discovery and translational research unit with a focus on identifying novel targets for development of game-changing therapies for patients with obesity and associated cardiometabolic diseases. We employ advanced computational biology, state-of-the-art discovery screening technologies, genetics, and human-centric cell systems to dissect pathophysiology and identify novel drug targets.

This laboratory-based position will focus on cell culture support for the development of large-scale qualitative and quantitative functional genomics screens utilizing human derived central nervous system (CNS) models. There is an overarching aim to characterize genes and genetic regulatory circuits involved in the control of cellular metabolism and advance discovery projects by performing in vitro experiments under partial supervision.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work in an in vitro setting using aseptic technique, passaging, expansion, cryopreservation, assessment of cell-line quality, and cell characterization
  • Maintain mammalian cell cultures derived from iPSC and/or primary neuronal or glial models
  • Utilize functional cell-based assays and support in the development of immunoassays (western blot, ELISA, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence staining), fluorescent microscopy, and other imaging methods
  • Operate and maintain standard lab equipment
  • Document experimental plans and procedures timely with attention to detail
  • Exhibit self-motivation and proactive attitude in designing and conducting experiments using state-of-the-art technologies
  • With some supervision, plan, conduct or monitor experiments, record and organize data, analyze results, troubleshoot, and generate robust and reliable data

Basic Qualifications:

Master’s degree and 1 year of related scientific experience

OR

Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of related scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of mammalian cell culturing experience
  • Demonstrated experience using assay technologies (e.g., luminescence, fluorescence, TR-FRET, AlphaLISA or high-content systems).
  • Experience performing molecular biology experiments (such as RNA, DNA extraction, qPCR, cloning, CRISPR/Cas9-based genome editing) or performing antibody-based experiments (flow cytometry, ELISA, immunofluorescence imaging and western blot).
  • Hands-on experience in handling samples in 96-well format is preferred
  • Familiarity with Metabolic Disease Pathophysiology
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in GraphPad Prism, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
