CDM Smith is always looking for talented Automation and Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) specialists to join our team as we embark on exciting SCADA and automation projects for various clients across public, private, and federal sectors.

This is a proactive application opportunity for future roles within our Automation Practice. We regularly evaluate resumes and qualified candidates will be contacted as suitable openings arise.

As an Automation Engineer at CDM Smith, you will:

  • Create fundamental to moderately complex instrumentation, controls, and related systems designs while using advanced 3D and 4D design practices.
  • Assist with specification development and design of human-machine interface (HMI) graphics, programmable logic controller (PLC) programming, and report development.
  • Assist in the testing and startup of control systems, ensuring compliance with project requirements.
  • Review a range of component-level shop drawings and contractor clarifications while providing testing oversight.
  • Develop basic to moderately complex Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), control system architectures, specifications, and control descriptions for programming use.
  • Lead junior staff by providing guidance and mentorship, reviewing their work as necessary.
  • Support proposal preparation and presentation, as well as marketing and new business activities tied to the automation strategy.
  • Perform other job-related duties as required.

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Additional directly related experience may substitute for a college degree.

Domestic and international travel may be required based on specific job duties and project needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in Water/Wastewater preferred.
  • Previous work within an engineering or integration firm preferred.
