Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly motivated Automation Engineer to support laboratory automation initiatives and instrument management within a CLIA-certified clinical genomics laboratory. This role will focus on developing, optimizing, and maintaining automated workflows using Tecan liquid handling systems, while ensuring reliable operation and compliance with laboratory instrument standards.
The Automation Engineer will collaborate closely with Laboratory Operations, Bioinformatics, Software Engineering, and Quality teams to improve throughput, reproducibility, and operational efficiency across molecular testing workflows.
What You'll Do:
Laboratory Automation
- Develop, implement, and optimize automated workflows using Tecan liquid handling platforms (e.g., Fluent, Freedom EVO, Spark, or similar).
- Design automation scripts and protocols to support DNA extraction, library preparation, and other molecular biology workflows.
- Evaluate and integrate automation solutions to improve laboratory throughput and reduce manual processing.
- Troubleshoot automation errors and implement solutions to improve system reliability.
- Support technology transfer of new assays from R&D into the clinical laboratory.
Instrument Management
- Manage the lifecycle of laboratory instruments including installation, validation, maintenance, and retirement.
- Coordinate IQ/OQ/PQ validation activities for new instruments and automation systems.
- Ensure instruments remain compliant with CLIA, CAP, and other regulatory requirements.
- Oversee scheduling and documentation of preventive maintenance, calibration, and service events.
- Maintain instrument records and documentation in accordance with laboratory quality systems.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work with Lab Operations and Quality teams to ensure automation processes meet regulatory and operational requirements.
- Partner with Software Engineering and Bioinformatics teams to integrate automation platforms with LIMS and data systems.
- Provide training and technical support to laboratory staff on automated instruments and workflows.
- Support continuous process improvement initiatives across laboratory operations.
What You'll Need:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, or related field
- 3+ years experience with laboratory automation systems
- Hands-on experience with Tecan liquid handling platforms
- Experience with instrument validation (IQ/OQ/PQ) and regulated laboratory environments
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Experience supporting high-throughput laboratory workflows
- Experience working in CLIA/CAP regulated laboratories
- Experience with NGS workflows (DNA extraction, library preparation, sequencing prep)
- Familiarity with LIMS integration and laboratory software systems
- Experience with scripting or automation programming
- Experience managing instrument qualification and documentation
Location, Compensation, and Benefits:
- Location: This position requires being on-site 5 days a week at our Menlo Park, CA office.
- Compensation: Annual base salary range is $130,000 - $180,000, based on experience. This role is also eligible for equity.
