Backend & Data Engineer (APIs & ETL Pipelines)
Overview / Summary
We are seeking a Backend & Data Platform Engineer to build and support backend services, data pipelines, and database structures for a modern web portal and data platform. This role involves developing RESTful APIs, designing data ingestion and transformation pipelines, and supporting synchronization and export processes. The position focuses on delivering scalable, reliable backend services and a maintainable data foundation to support ongoing dataset expansion.
Key Responsibilities
Backend API & Service Development
- Design and develop RESTful API services to support backend operations
- Build services for data retrieval, metadata management, content management, authentication, audit logging, export generation, and data synchronization
- Implement reusable backend patterns and service components for scalability and maintainability
- Apply controls such as authentication filters, rate limiting, request logging, and standardized response formatting
Data Engineering & ETL
- Design and build ETL transformation pipelines for ingesting data into analytical and operational data stores
- Implement batch processing for data standardization, deduplication, cleansing, and aggregate generation
- Support synchronization between source data, processed data, and application-facing data structures
- Deliver ETL tools and processing logic for client maintainability post-handoff
Database & Data Model Design
- Design extensible database schemas to support onboarding of multiple datasets without application changes
- Build and optimize relational database structures for performance, scalability, and maintainability
- Support multi-store data patterns as required by the solution architecture
- Define data dictionaries, structures, and technical documentation
Data Quality, Reliability & Operational Support
- Implement data quality validation checks including schema validation, completeness checks, suppression preservation, integrity checks, referential integrity, and deduplication
- Build automated rollback and recovery mechanisms for synchronization failures
- Ensure structured error logging and operational visibility across backend and data processes
- Maintain reliable, secure, and auditable backend operations
Collaboration & Technical Delivery
- Collaborate with frontend, architecture, QA, DevOps, and project teams to align backend and data services with solution needs
- Contribute to API design discussions, performance optimization, and delivery planning
- Produce technical handover documentation to support client operational readiness
- Support Agile delivery across design, development, testing, and deployment
Required Qualifications
- Strong experience designing and developing RESTful APIs
- Strong experience with backend application development and service-layer design
- Experience working with relational databases, schema design, and performance-focused data structures
- Experience building ETL pipelines, batch processes, and data transformation workflows
- Experience implementing data quality controls and validation logic
- Experience supporting synchronization, logging, and error-handling in backend/data workflows
- Strong understanding of structured data, metadata, and extensible data model design
- Ability to work across backend and data engineering responsibilities
- Strong documentation and handoff discipline
- Ability to write unit tests using PHPUnit for backend service modules
