Job Description

Joining Arup

Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach have set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world. At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

We are seeking a BESS Engineer to support the operational, commercial, and technical performance of utility-scale and C&I battery energy storage and hybrid renewable projects across the US. This role can be based in any of our West offices (Los Angeles, Oakland, San Francisco, Seattle, San Diego) or our South offices (Austin, Dallas, Houston).

This role sits at the intersection of engineering, asset management, and commercial performance, working with owners, operators, OEMs, EPCs, and market participants to ensure assets meet availability, revenue, and compliance objectives. You will play a key role in translating contractual obligations and technical requirements into actionable operational strategies while supporting optimization, reporting, and performance improvement efforts.

What makes this role unique is the ability to combine hands-on technical depth in BESS and solar with client-facing advisory work, exposure to multiple ISO markets, and collaboration across Arup’s global energy, power systems, and commercial advisory teams.

The Opportunity

  • Serve as a technical and commercial advisor supporting the operational performance of BESS, solar, and hybrid renewable energy assets.
  • Monitor asset performance against availability targets, performance guarantees, and financial objectives, identifying underperformance and recommending corrective actions.
  • Interpret EPC agreements, OEM warranties, service agreements, and interconnection requirements, translating contractual obligations into operational KPIs and workflows.
  • Support EMS, SCADA, and data analytics activities, including SoC/SoH assessment, fleet health monitoring, and degradation analysis.
  • Assist with commissioning, testing, and operational readiness activities, coordinating across vendors, contractors, and internal teams.
  • Prepare clear, client-facing technical reports, dashboards, and presentations communicating asset health, risks, and optimization opportunities.
  • Track and assess evolving regulatory and market requirements across ISO markets (e.g., NYISO, ISO‑NE, CAISO) and their implications for asset operations.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across Arup to deliver integrated advisory and engineering services.

The Skills

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Energy Systems, or a related field.
  • 4+ years of experience in energy storage, solar, renewable energy asset management, or power systems operations.
  • Hands-on experience with BESS operations, commissioning, EMS/SCADA systems, or asset performance monitoring.
  • Working knowledge of EPC contracts, OEM warranties, service agreements, and performance guarantees.
  • Familiarity with ISO energy markets (e.g., NYISO, ISO‑NE, CAISO) and storage participation or interconnection requirements.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical and contractual topics for clients and stakeholders.
