Role Description The Biotech Lab Automation Specialist / Research Process Engineer / Life Sciences Automation Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining automated systems and workflows in biotechnology and life sciences laboratories. This role focuses on improving experimental efficiency, reproducibility, and scalability by integrating robotics, instrumentation, and software solutions into laboratory processes.

Key responsibilities include configuring and programming laboratory automation equipment, optimizing experimental protocols, troubleshooting automation systems, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards, and collaborating with research scientists to translate experimental requirements into automated workflows.

Lab Automation Specialists focus on system setup, calibration, and operation, Research Process Engineers optimize experimental processes and protocols, while Life Sciences Automation Engineers design, implement, and maintain end-to-end automated laboratory solutions.

At senior levels, responsibilities expand to leading lab automation projects, selecting and implementing advanced technologies, developing standard operating procedures for automation, mentoring junior staff, and contributing to strategic initiatives to enhance lab productivity and innovation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field (Master’s or PhD preferred)
  • Proven experience with laboratory automation systems, robotics, or high-throughput experimental platforms
  • Strong understanding of laboratory techniques and processes in molecular biology, genetics, or life sciences research
  • Proficiency in programming and software used in lab automation (e.g., Python, LabVIEW, robotic scripting languages)
  • Knowledge of quality control, compliance standards, and lab safety protocols (GLP/GMP)
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Strong analytical and process optimization abilities
  • Ability to collaborate with research and engineering teams to design and implement automated workflows
  • Attention to detail and focus on accuracy, reproducibility, and efficiency in lab operations
  • Strategic mindset for applying automation to improve research throughput and innovation
