About the Team

OpenAI didn’t begin as a traditional company. It began as an idea: that artificial intelligence could be developed in a way that benefits everyone. As a creative team, our role is to help make sure the work behind that idea is understood, as it leaves the lab and meets the world.

This company works at the frontier of intelligence. Like any frontier, it’s unfinished, constantly shifting, and still being explored. Our job is to stay close to that uncertainty and help shape how this story gets told, in a way that feels grounded and human. We do this through campaigns, launches, films, brand systems, and work that doesn’t fit neatly into any of those categories yet. This team is for people who want to help shape something from the beginning

About the Role

We’re looking for an experienced Brand Designer to join our Growth creative team in driving creative excellence for the OpenAI brand at scale, globally.

In this role, you’ll translate brand principles into flexible design systems and social ideas that work hard across fast-moving digital channels. You’ll partner closely with internal teams in growth, brand and production, as well as external agencies, to raise the bar on creative craft while enabling rapid iteration. This role is ideal for a designer who sees systems as a creative tool and understands how strong design decisions drive quality, scale and results.

To us, creativity is a team sport. We value curiosity over certainty, kindness over ego, and the ability to balance craft with decisiveness.

This role is based in New York or San Francisco, with periodic travel to other OpenAI offices.

In this role, you will:

  • Design scalable creative systems that translate OpenAI’s brand into breakthrough creative ideas across growth, social, paid, and lifecycle channels.
  • Partner with brand, motion and campaign design teams to raise the craft of execution across all growth creative—typography, layout, motion thinking, and visual storytelling.
  • Translate abstract ideas and complex technology into clear, inspiring, and elegant visual communication.
  • Help shape creative process and resources (frameworks, templates, toolkits) to enable scale and innovation.
  • Partner with growth teams to inject relevant insights into every stage of the creative process.
  • Steer external agencies by setting direction, providing feedback, and ensuring work meets OpenAI’s creative and brand standards.
  • Lead briefs for both evergreen and campaign work as a key representative of both brand and growth teams.
  • Participate in design sprints to quickly translate strategy and insights into a broad range of performance-ready creative.

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Have 7+ years of experience in design, including leadership roles focused on growth, social, or scaled systems for modern technology.
  • Are a conceptual thinker who can ideate strategically and visually across formats.
  • Have a high standard for craft and a sharp eye for detail—even under tight timelines.
  • Are comfortable using data, testing, and insights to inform creative direction without losing intuition or taste.
  • Can move easily between strategy and execution, from defining systems to pushing pixels when needed.
  • Can lead collaboratively across disciplines and give clear, constructive feedback.
  • Have experience working with agencies and enjoy guiding external teams toward great work.
