Works closely with: R&D, Systems, Regulatory, and Clinical Advisors
About the Role
We are seeking a Clinical Engineer to join our Clinical Engineering team and play a central role in advancing the development of our endoluminal surgical robotic platform. This is a hands‑on, highly collaborative position for someone who can lead clinical engineering test activities, represent the CE function in cross‑functional workstreams, and translate clinical and experimental insight into clear, actionable guidance for the broader business.
You will work as part of the existing Clinical Engineering team, providing critical capacity and ownership across testing, protocol development, feedback synthesis, and stakeholder communication. This role is ideal for someone with experience in endoscopy, endoluminal devices, or GI interventions, who is comfortable operating at the intersection of engineering, biology, and clinical workflow.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Engineering Leadership & Workstream Representation
- Represent the Clinical Engineering team in cross‑functional workstreams, contributing clinical and bioengineering insight to design, systems, and product decisions.
- Take ownership of defined clinical engineering workstreams, including planning, execution, and reporting.
- Act as a key interface between Clinical Engineering and R&D, ensuring clinical realities are reflected in technical development.
- Support and scale existing CE activities, providing direct support to current team members and increasing overall team throughput.
- Lead the development of test protocols and study designs for benchtop, ex vivo, and in vivo models.
- Execute and oversee testing related to:
- Tissue interaction and manipulation
- Endoluminal navigation and access
- Electrosurgical performance
- Instrument behavior and failure modes
- Procedural workflow and usability
- Ensure testing is clinically relevant, reproducible, and aligned with development milestones.
- Drive investigations, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis based on test outcomes.
Endoluminal & Clinical Expertise
- Develop and maintain deep understanding of:
- Endoluminal anatomy and GI procedural workflows
- Endoscopy systems and accessories
- Soft tissue mechanics and energy‑tissue interactions
- Serve as an internal subject matter expert on how the system behaves within the GI tract and during endoscopic procedures.
- Incorporate clinician feedback into test design and engineering recommendations.
Data, Feedback & Communication
- Collect, organize, and interpret experimental and qualitative data.
- Synthesize findings into clear, concise feedback for engineering, leadership, and clinical stakeholders.
- Prepare and present test readouts, recommendations, and trade‑off analyses.
- Ensure insights from testing and clinical feedback are disseminated effectively across the business.
Documentation & Design Controls
- Author technical reports, test protocols, and study summaries.
- Contribute to risk management activities, including FMEAs, hazard analyses, and design justifications.
- Operate within ISO 13485 design control processes and internal SOPs.
- Support regulatory‑facing documentation by ensuring traceable, well‑documented evidence.
Laboratory & Prototype Support
- Design, set up, and improve benchtop and biological test rigs.
- Prepare and handle biological and synthetic tissue models.
- Support prototype evaluations, performance characterization, and iteration cycles.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of CE lab methods and infrastructure.
Qualifications & Experience
Required
- BSc or MSc in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, Robotics, or a related discipline.
- Industry or applied research experience in medical devices, clinical engineering, or translational research.
- Hands‑on experience working with biological tissues or clinically relevant models.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex findings clearly.
- Comfortable working with animal and cadaveric tissue.
Strongly Preferred
- Experience with endoscopy, endoluminal devices, or GI interventions.
- Familiarity with electrosurgery, energy‑based devices, or imaging systems.
- Experience leading or owning test activities rather than only supporting them.
- Exposure to clinical environments or direct interaction with clinicians.
- Working knowledge of Python, MATLAB, or similar tools for light data analysis.
