This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite at Greenwich Drive (San Diego, CA) and remote.

DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Risk Management, the Clinical Risk Manager serves as a consultative partner supporting UC San Diego Health’s enterprise risk management program. The role is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and mitigating clinical and operational risk across the organization through proactive assessment, event investigation, data analysis, and leadership consultation.

The Clinical Risk Manager collaborates with clinical, operational, and executive leadership to reduce liability exposure, enhance patient safety, support regulatory compliance, and advance system-wide risk mitigation strategies aligned with organizational priorities.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Leads and coordinates evaluation of professional and general liability events, including multidisciplinary fact-gathering, clinical and operational analysis, and assessment of organizational risk exposure. Synthesizes findings to inform leadership decision-making and recommends system-level mitigation strategies to reduce organizational exposure.
  • Applies an enterprise risk management framework (ISO 31000) to support risk identification, analysis, evaluation, mitigation, and monitoring. Proactively identifies risk through structured assessments, direct observation, data trending, committee review, third party reports, legal inquires, and administrative referrals. Collaborates with stakeholders to design innovative strategies that reduce the frequency and severity of medical malpractice and patient injury claims. Integrates enterprise risk management principles into operational and clinical environments to support risk-informed decision-making across departments and leadership levels.
  • Assists with oversight of organizational event reporting processes to ensure effective identification, triage, and escalation of safety and liability risks. Utilizes event data to identify emerging trends, inform leadership, and support development and monitoring of mitigation strategies.
  • Manages and implements the organization's enterprise risk management program to advance strategic priorities and compliance with state and federal regulatory and accreditation standards. Reviews and drafts policies within the risk management domain and coordinates required reporting to regulatory authorities. Provides subject-matter expertise to leadership regarding risk implications of organizational initiatives, policy development, and regulatory requirements.
  • Serves as a trusted advisor to physicians, operational leaders, and administrative departments regarding clinical and enterprise risk exposure.. Evaluates emerging initiatives, operational changes, and high-risk activities to support informed organizational decision-making Participates in and partners with multidisciplinary committees to monitor and mitigate high-risk areas .
  • Partners with UCSDH Office of Campus Counsel, coordinating legal consultation for staff and physicians as indicated. Develops and delivers targeted education for employees and physicians on relevant risk management topics.
  • Collaborates with Patient Safety, Quality/Performance Improvement, Patient Experience, and other assigned departments ensuring alignment between risk mitigation activities and organizational quality, safety, and operational goals. Participates in hospital quality and patient safety committees to integrate risk insights into system improvement efforts.
  • Leads or supports enterprise initiatives involving risk analytics, leadership reporting, and development of system-level recommendations to reduce organizational exposure. Participates in professional risk management organizations through presentations, committee service, and other industry engagement activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
