Commissioning Manager

Location

Introduction

Brunel is supporting a major mining operation with the recruitment of an experienced Commissioning Manager to lead the commissioning and start‑up phases of large, complex capital projects. This contract position will be based between Santiago, Chile and site, supporting multiple projects from early definition through erection, commissioning, start‑up, and handover to operations.

The successful candidate will bring strong technical, leadership, and coordination capabilities, with proven experience delivering commissioning scopes across high‑value mining or heavy industrial projects.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop, and execute comprehensive commissioning and start‑up strategies for multiple capital projects ranging from USD $5M to $800M, including international projects.
  • Lead pre‑commissioning, commissioning, wet/ore commissioning, and start‑up activities to support safe and efficient project delivery.
  • Review P&IDs, flow sheets, design drawings, and specifications to understand system boundaries, subsystems, and commissioning scope.
  • Understand and validate Turnover Package (TOP) structures and provide input to EPCM partners to ensure logical system handover sequencing.
  • Coordinate commissioning activities with construction sequencing to optimize construction completion and commissioning efficiency.
  • Work closely with EPCM contractors to align pre‑commissioning plans with commissioning and start‑up execution.
  • Develop commissioning schedules, procedures, manpower plans, safety guidelines, test procedures, and handover processes.
  • Recruit, train, lead, and manage commissioning teams across multiple projects.
  • Interface and negotiate with clients, vendors, contractors, and internal stakeholders on commissioning goals, priorities, and execution strategies.
  • Review contractor QA/QC documentation, installation records, and operations and maintenance manuals to confirm compliance prior to commissioning.
  • Coordinate vendor representative participation during commissioning and start‑up activities.
  • Ensure all commissioning activities and documentation are captured in project systems, working closely with Document Control to prepare turnover packages.
  • Manage commissioning of owner‑supplied scope outside EPCM battery limits, including power, water, controls, reagents, raw material feeds, and ancillary systems.
  • Work with site operations and contractor teams to conduct acceptance testing, support operational handover, and transition to steady‑state operations.
  • Participate in punch‑list inspections, post‑start‑up activities, and commissioning close‑out.
  • Contribute to the development of commissioning spares inventories, special tools, and testing equipment requirements.
  • Perform other duties as required to support successful project delivery.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related discipline with minimum 10 years of commissioning experience,
  • OR High School diploma / GED with minimum 15 years of progressive commissioning experience.
  • Proven experience commissioning large‑scale mining or heavy industrial capital projects.
  • Full professional fluency in Spanish (spoken and written).
  • Strong leadership, team management, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Solid understanding of construction, commissioning, and start‑up safety practices.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently, accept international assignments, and work on site as required.
  • Mining construction and commissioning experience strongly preferred.
