Job Description

Level is a learning technology company dedicated to helping students build real academic and life skills with confidence and joy. We combine proven curriculum principles with world class interactive design to make meaningful practice something students want to come back to, not something they struggle through.

We support what teachers, schools, and parents are already doing by increasing student engagement with high quality, standards aligned practice that reinforces classroom learning. That’s why we’re building:

For students: Rewarding and motivating learning experiences that meet students where they are to build real academic proficiency.

For educators: Tools that fit naturally into instruction and help students stay engaged while reducing teacher workload.

For parents: Activities that help your kid catch up or get ahead, build confidence, and minimize homework battles, whether learning at school or at home.

We are committed to helping every person maximize their potential and live a life of meaning. It’s a difficult problem that requires brilliant people and tremendous effort over time.

Level is seeking a Concept Artist. In this role, you will be responsible for creating visually compelling and imaginative artwork that helps define the look and feel of our games across multiple platforms. Working closely with the Art Director and cross-disciplinary teams, you will develop key concepts, character/environment pieces, pre-visualizations of interactive media that may include UI and loose sketches to facilitate conversation while maintaining consistency with our artistic vision.

Your contributions will directly shape the player experience, bringing vibrant, engaging worlds to life and help us develop our roadmaps with fast ideation.

What You Will Do:

  • Work with the Art Director to develop the visual style of our games, contributing to a cohesive artistic direction across all assets.
  • Deliver inspiring artwork that communicates ideas clearly and aligns with the project's art direction and brief.
  • Create concept art and style guides that informs the development of in-game assets, ensuring a seamless transition from concept to production.
  • Participate in feedback sessions, offering and receiving constructive critique to maintain a high-quality artistic standard.
  • Maintain consistency in visual style and create guides that enable other artists to understand the style pillars and key elements.

What You Need:

  • Strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in different facets of concept art, including objects, environment and character design.
  • Ability to work in multiple styles and confident in highly stylized work.
  • Proficiency in industry-standard software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and other digital painting tools.
  • Deep understanding of shape language, anatomy for stylized characters, costuming, character posing, composition, color theory, lighting, and visual storytelling.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to feedback in a collaborative, iterative development environment.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills, with the ability to self-manage tasks and meet deadlines. Proactively ask for feedback while remaining open to sharing ideation progress.
  • Ability to craft visual designs that fit within the gameplay and technical requirements.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with one or more major game engines (Godot, Unreal Engine, Unity, Frostbite, Call of Duty Engine, etc.) and its art pipeline.
  • Storyboarding skill
  • UI Design Skill (concept and Pre-Vis)
  • 3D experience to inform how 2D work translates to the character pipeline.
