Job Description

Controls Engineer

Position Overview

We are seeking a Controls Engineer to design, implement, and support automated control systems for plastic manufacturing equipment. The ideal candidate will develop PLC logic, integrate HMIs, program motion systems, and provide electrical and pneumatic/hydraulic troubleshooting to improve machine performance, reliability, and safety. This role collaborates with mechanical, process and production teams to deliver robust, SOP-driven solutions that meet production targets and quality requirements.

Key Responsibilities Design, program, and commission PLC control systems (primarily Allen-Bradley/Rockwell) for plastic processing and manufacturing equipment. Develop and maintain HMI screens and logic to provide clear operator interfaces and effective machine diagnostics. Specify, integrate, and tune motion control components including servos and VFDs for precise machine operation. Implement data logging and analysis systems to capture production metrics, faults, and machine performance for continuous improvement. Create and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts in accordance with industry standards and safety requirements. Troubleshoot and resolve electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic issues on shop floor equipment to minimize downtime. Collaborate with manufacturing, maintenance, and quality teams to develop and document SOPs, test procedures, and change control records. Lead FAT/SAT activities, support machine startups, and provide on-site commissioning and operator training as required. Drive continuous improvement initiatives to increase throughput, reduce scrap, and improve energy efficiency using data-driven methods. Ensure compliance with applicable codes, safety standards, and company policies during design and implementation. Qualifications Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Controls Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience. 5+ years of hands-on experience in industrial controls engineering, preferably in plastics or manufacturing environments. Proven experience programming PLCs (Allen-Bradley/Rockwell preferred) and developing HMI applications. Knowledge of motion control systems including servos, VFDs, and encoder feedback tuning. Practical experience with industrial electrical systems, wiring, and schematic interpretation. Familiarity with pneumatics and hydraulics used in automated machinery. Experience implementing data logging, process monitoring, and industrial communications (EtherNet/IP, Modbus, etc.). Strong troubleshooting skills and experience performing commissioning, start-ups, and field support. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience producing SOPs, technical documentation, and training materials. Ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced manufacturing environment and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
