Controls Engineer

Location: Onsite in Missouri City, TX

Salary: $90-130k DOE

Position Overview

We are seeking a Controls Engineer to design, develop, and implement industrial control systems for automated equipment and processes. The ideal candidate will lead PLC and HMI programming, electrical panel design, and system integration while ensuring compliance with NEC and UL standards. This role supports projects from concept and panel layout through commissioning, troubleshooting, and documentation, collaborating with cross-functional teams and customers to deliver reliable, code-compliant control solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, program, and commission PLC systems (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Rockwell) to meet project specifications and performance goals.
  • Develop HMI applications and operator interfaces for intuitive machine control and monitoring.
  • Implement and troubleshoot communication protocols such as Modbus and other fieldbus standards for device integration.
  • Create and review electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts using AutoCAD, CAD tools, and SolidWorks for enclosure and component design.
  • Design and specify control panels, components and wiring to meet NEC and UL requirements; prepare documentation for UL evaluation when required.
  • Perform factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and field commissioning; diagnose and resolve control system issues during startup and production.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and project teams to integrate controls into overall system designs and ensure manufacturability.
  • Produce and maintain clear technical documentation, BOMs, wiring diagrams, software version control, and user manuals.
  • Provide technical support to customers and internal teams, including training operators and maintenance staff.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, including standardization of panels, control logic, and documentation templates.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in controls engineering, PLC programming, and HMI development.
  • Proven experience with Allen-Bradley, Siemens, and Rockwell PLC platforms and associated programming environments (e.g., Studio 5000, TIA Portal).
  • Experience with panel design and layout; familiarity with NEC and UL Standards and applying them to control panels.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, electrical CAD tools, and SolidWorks for creating schematics and panel enclosures.
  • Strong understanding of electrical wiring, schematics, motor control, relays, VFDs, and industrial sensors/actuators.
  • Food or beverage manufacturing background is highly preferred, but not required.
