Job Summary:

The Automation & Controls Engineer (or Engineering Supervisor) is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving automated systems within a manufacturing or material handling environment. This role ensures optimal equipment performance, minimizes downtime, and supports continuous improvement initiatives across operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve issues related to automated equipment and control systems to improve reliability and performance
  • Support and maintain material handling and automation systems including conveyors, sortation systems, scanners, cameras, and print/apply equipment
  • Work with PLCs, industrial networks, motor control systems, servo drives, and variable frequency drives (VFDs)
  • Perform root cause analysis on equipment failures and implement corrective actions
  • Partner with operations, maintenance, and vendors to develop and execute system improvements and upgrades
  • Monitor system performance metrics and provide data-driven recommendations to reduce downtime and improve efficiency
  • Provide first-level technical support for equipment and controls issues, both on-site and remotely
  • Escalate complex issues to vendors or engineering leadership when necessary to restore operations quickly
  • Lead or support installation, maintenance, and upgrades of automation equipment
  • Train and mentor technicians on equipment operation, troubleshooting, and safety procedures
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, including OSHA regulations and 5S practices
  • Coordinate with suppliers and contractors for repairs, parts, and service support
  • Prepare technical reports, document findings, and recommend long-term solutions for recurring issue

Qualifications:

  • Experience with automation, controls systems, or industrial maintenance in manufacturing, distribution, or similar environments
  • Working knowledge of PLCs, electrical systems, and industrial automation technologies
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical documentation
  • Experience working with vendors and cross-functional teams
  • Strong communication and leadership skills (especially for supervisor roles)
