Job Summary:
The Automation & Controls Engineer (or Engineering Supervisor) is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving automated systems within a manufacturing or material handling environment. This role ensures optimal equipment performance, minimizes downtime, and supports continuous improvement initiatives across operations.
Responsibilities:
- Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve issues related to automated equipment and control systems to improve reliability and performance
- Support and maintain material handling and automation systems including conveyors, sortation systems, scanners, cameras, and print/apply equipment
- Work with PLCs, industrial networks, motor control systems, servo drives, and variable frequency drives (VFDs)
- Perform root cause analysis on equipment failures and implement corrective actions
- Partner with operations, maintenance, and vendors to develop and execute system improvements and upgrades
- Monitor system performance metrics and provide data-driven recommendations to reduce downtime and improve efficiency
- Provide first-level technical support for equipment and controls issues, both on-site and remotely
- Escalate complex issues to vendors or engineering leadership when necessary to restore operations quickly
- Lead or support installation, maintenance, and upgrades of automation equipment
- Train and mentor technicians on equipment operation, troubleshooting, and safety procedures
- Ensure compliance with safety standards, including OSHA regulations and 5S practices
- Coordinate with suppliers and contractors for repairs, parts, and service support
- Prepare technical reports, document findings, and recommend long-term solutions for recurring issue
Qualifications:
- Experience with automation, controls systems, or industrial maintenance in manufacturing, distribution, or similar environments
- Working knowledge of PLCs, electrical systems, and industrial automation technologies
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical documentation
- Experience working with vendors and cross-functional teams
- Strong communication and leadership skills (especially for supervisor roles)
