Job Description

WORK LOCATION TYPE: Hybrid (2-3 days onsite)

JOB TYPE: Full-time

SALARY: DOE!

OVERVIEW

BrainWorks is currently seeking a Data Scientist for a full-time opportunity in Boston, MA (hybrid). This role sits within a growing data science function at a high-growth, IoT-driven organization and is focused on applying machine learning and advanced analytics to solve real-world business problems.

This is not a traditional, research-oriented data science role. The position requires someone who can operate across customer analytics, product experimentation, and operational machine learning, while working through ambiguous problem statements, imperfect data, and evolving business needs. The ideal candidate will be early in their career (2–5 years of working experience) but already demonstrating strong ownership, curiosity, and the ability to independently structure and solve problems.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and apply machine learning models to support customer analytics, including churn, lifetime value, and expansion opportunities
  • Design and analyze experiments in real-world environments where data may be limited, indirect, or noisy
  • Leverage event-driven and IoT data to identify leading indicators and support proactive operational decision‑making
  • Take loosely defined business problems and structure clear analytical approaches
  • Work with incomplete or imperfect datasets to generate meaningful, actionable insights
  • Translate analytical outputs into clear recommendations that drive business decisions
  • Partner cross‑functionally with Product, Engineering, Operations, and Commercial teams
  • Contribute to building scalable approaches to experimentation, modeling, and insight generation

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2–5 years of experience in data science, machine learning, or advanced analytics
  • Strong foundation in machine learning and applied statistics
  • Hands‑on experience with:
  • Python (modeling, analysis, experimentation)
  • SQL (data extraction, joins, transformations)
  • Experience building, evaluating, and iterating on machine learning models (e.g., classification, regression, or similar approaches)
  • Demonstrated ability to:
  • Work through ambiguous problems and define a structured approach
  • Deliver insights from imperfect or incomplete data
  • Connect data outputs to business decisions and outcomes
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical thinking to non‑technical stakeholders

NICE‑TO‑HAVE

  • Experience working across the full lifecycle: data → modeling → insights
  • Exposure to experimentation frameworks or product analytics
  • Experience working with event‑driven, time‑series, or IoT data
  • Familiarity with AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude) as part of day‑to‑day workflow
  • Demonstrated curiosity through side projects, experimentation, or self‑driven learning

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE IN THIS ROLE

  • Ability to take ambiguous problems and independently structure solutions
  • Confidence working with messy, indirect, or incomplete datasets
  • Demonstrated technical depth — able to go beyond surface‑level explanations
  • Clear translation of analytical work into business impact
  • Growing ownership over both problem definition and solution design
