Data Scientist Intern (or Junior Data Scientist) | Luth Research | Handshake

The Data Scientist Intern will work closely with senior team members to assist in collecting, cleaning, analyzing, and interpreting data to extract valuable insights and create actionable plans while generating improved workflow, user experiences, efficient communication, growth, scalability, increased revenue, and profitability.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

• Transform unstructured data into structured, actionable feeds using Python scripting and data processing techniques.

• Apply pattern matching and classification methods to identify and categorize digital activity data, including web and app usage signals from device-level data streams.

• Utilize Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI-assisted development tools to enhance data processing workflows, improve pattern recognition accuracy, and accelerate solution development.

• Build and maintain data transformation scripts and lightweight pipelines that feed into the broader ETL infrastructure.

• Collaborate with the data engineering team to validate data quality, troubleshoot discrepancies, and ensure output accuracy against known benchmarks.

• Support client data deliverables by preparing, formatting, and quality-checking datasets for delivery.

• Ensure work is tested and validated before deployment, including verifying data accuracy and output consistency across pipeline stages.

• Maintain clear technical documentation including architecture decisions, QA processes, and workflow descriptions to ensure AI-assisted work is reproducible, auditable, and transferable.

• Contribute to technical direction and architectural discussions and may own specific technical initiatives as assigned.

• Document work in JIRA, including tracking progress on assigned tasks and collaborating with the team on ticket creation and prioritization.

• Collaborate with sales and cross-functional teams to provide insight on data capabilities and areas of possible growth for clients.

• Any other tasks and projects as assigned by management.

Judgment: Comprehension of job requirements and procedures. Can initiate and perform work assignments under minimal supervision that may be broad, varied, and complex in nature. Employee must have the ability to use educated and intuitive judgment to make decisions.

Analysis: Mathematical and analytical aptitude; comfort with numeric calculations, data patterns, and statistical reasoning for accuracy of reports and tasks.

BS Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or a related field, or equivalent work-related experience.

Specific Job Experience and Skills:

• 3+ years of experience in data science, data engineering, or a related analytical role.
