Director of Managed Accounts Strategic Initiatives

Why This Role Exists

Schwab’s managed accounts business is entering its next phase of growth, complexity, and strategic importance across Retail and Advisor channels. The Director of Managed Accounts Strategic Initiatives plays a critical enterprise role—shaping the long‑term vision, economic model, and governance of Schwab’s third‑party and proprietary managed accounts platform, while leading the delivery of the highest‑impact initiatives that modernize capabilities, manage risk, and enable sustainable growth.

Organization

Schwab Investment Platforms, Solutions, and Strategy (SIPSS) brings together investment platforms, product solutions, and product strategy to set direction and drive investment across managed accounts, third‑party platforms, digital advice, and emerging capabilities. Within SIPSS, this role sits in the Investment Offers & Solutions (IOS) group and within Managed Accounts Solutions (MAS), which owns the end‑to‑end strategy, evolution, and governance of Schwab’s managed investing offerings, with a primary focus on Separately Managed Accounts (SMAs).

The Role

Reporting to senior MAS leadership, the Director of Managed Accounts Strategic Initiatives leads cross‑platform, multi‑year initiatives that define what Schwab builds, why it builds it, and how it delivers it at scale. The role operates at both the strategic and execution levels—setting long‑term roadmaps and economic frameworks while driving disciplined delivery across large, matrixed partner teams including Legal, Compliance, Risk, Operations, Technology, Advisor Services, Investor Services, Schwab Asset Management, and external asset managers and vendors.

This role also serves as an enterprise control point for complex investment strategies, including long/short and other non‑traditional approaches, ensuring consistent strategy design, governance, risk controls, and scalable delivery across retail and advisor‑led environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set and drive the multi‑year strategic vision and roadmap for managed accounts initiatives spanning platform capabilities, offer design, pricing and business models, governance, and risk management.
  • Lead enterprise coordination and oversight for complex strategies (e.g., long/short), providing independent analysis and executive recommendations across portfolio construction, leverage and exposure controls, suitability, capacity, and operational scalability.
  • Own end‑to‑end execution of high‑impact initiatives—from problem definition and business case development through delivery, change management, and performance measurement.
  • Conduct deep market, competitive, financial, and industry analysis to inform prioritization decisions and identify opportunities for differentiation and growth.
  • Make and defend complex trade‑off decisions balancing client outcomes, business economics, operational readiness, and risk.
  • Provide strategic oversight of managed accounts platforms, including objectives, governance, controls, and measurable results; represent MAS in enterprise governance forums.
  • Provide Chief‑of‑Staff–style support to MAS leadership, synthesizing strategy, progress, risks, and decisions into concise, executive‑ready narratives and materials.
  • Serve as a senior thought partner across IOS, MAS, Retail, Advisor Services, and Schwab Asset Management to drive alignment and execution.
  • Build, lead, and develop high‑performing teams directly or through influence, fostering strong collaboration and talent development.

What you have

  • 10+ years of experience in asset management, broker‑dealer, custodian, financial services intermediary, or management consulting; 3+ years in strategy consulting or internal strategy roles preferred.
  • Strong strategic and analytical skills, including business case development, financial modeling, competitive analysis, and risk assessment.
  • Proven ability to operate effectively across levels—providing executive leadership while engaging deeply in product, platform, and operational detail.
  • Comfort with ambiguity, strong judgment, and a results‑oriented, accountable mindset.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated influence at senior leadership levels.
  • Advanced proficiency in PowerPoint and Excel, with clear strength in executive storytelling and synthesis.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or equivalent post‑MBA experience preferred.
