The Director of Data Engineering is responsible for leading the design, development, and execution of enterprise data strategies within a Property & Casualty (P&C) insurance environment. This role oversees the architecture and delivery of scalable, high-quality data solutions that support underwriting, claims, actuarial, finance, and regulatory reporting functions. The Director will lead a team of data engineers and collaborate closely with business and technology stakeholders to ensure data platforms are reliable, secure, and aligned with organizational goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define and execute the enterprise data engineering strategy, aligning data platforms and pipelines with business priorities across underwriting, claims, and policy administration.
  • Lead the design, development, and optimization of ETL/ELT pipelines using tools such as SQL, Informatica, and SSIS, ensuring efficient data ingestion, transformation, and delivery.
  • Architect and manage modern cloud-based data platforms leveraging technologies such as Databricks and Azure Fabric, enabling scalable and high-performance data processing.
  • Oversee data integration across core insurance systems, third-party data providers, and internal platforms, ensuring data quality, consistency, and availability.
  • Establish and enforce data governance, data quality, and data security standards in alignment with regulatory and compliance requirements within the P&C insurance industry.
  • Partner with actuarial, finance, risk, and business teams to deliver data solutions that support analytics, reporting, and advanced modeling initiatives.
  • Drive modernization initiatives, transitioning legacy data environments to cloud-native architectures and improving overall data accessibility and performance.
  • Manage vendor relationships and evaluate new tools and technologies to enhance data engineering capabilities.
  • Develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for data platform performance, reliability, and delivery effectiveness.

Leadership & Team Management:

  • Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing data engineering team, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Define team structure, resource planning, and development pathways to support evolving business and technology needs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional leadership to prioritize initiatives and ensure successful delivery of data programs.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in data engineering or data platform development, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong experience in the P&C insurance industry, with knowledge of policy, claims, and underwriting data domains.
  • Advanced proficiency in SQL and hands-on experience with ETL/ELT tools such as Informatica and SSIS.
  • Experience with cloud-native data engineering platforms, including Databricks and Azure Fabric.
  • Strong understanding of data warehousing, data lakes, and modern data architectures.
  • Experience implementing data governance, data quality, and regulatory compliance frameworks.
  • Proven ability to lead large-scale data initiatives and manage cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with real-time data processing and streaming technologies.
  • Familiarity with advanced analytics, machine learning, or actuarial modeling data pipelines.
  • Experience in cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure.

This role requires a strategic thinker and hands-on leader who can drive data transformation initiatives while ensuring operational excellence in a highly regulated P&C insurance environment.
