Canadian Armed Forces | Forces armées canadiennes Overview As a member of the military, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Officers maintain and support all Army equipment, and the land-based equipment of the Royal Canadian Navy and the Royal Canadian Air Force. They are commissioned members of the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Branch of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Officers lead soldier technicians who keep equipment in top condition, working through all lifecycle phases, from design and acquisition to in-service support and disposal. They provide specialized engineering knowledge and lead teams of highly skilled technicians in various occupations including Vehicle, Weapon, Electronic-Optronic, and Materials. Work environment Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Officers work in diverse environments, including bases, garrisons across Canada, and deployed operations worldwide. They may work outdoors in field conditions. Typically, they are posted to large workshops leading teams of up to 30 technicians, making technical, administrative, and training decisions under guidance from senior officers. In the Regular Force, after training, you will be assigned to a base, with possible relocations. In the Primary Reserve, you serve part-time at a local unit, with flexible postings and the possibility of volunteer deployments. Entry plans Direct Entry Options Paid Education Options If you already hold a university degree, the CAF may place you directly into on-the-job training following basic training. Basic training and officer qualification training are mandatory before assignment. Training Basic officer training lasts 12 weeks at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. It covers military knowledge, leadership, weapons handling, first aid, and physical fitness. Following basic training, language training may be provided. Officers then attend the Infantry School at Gagetown, NB, for advanced leadership and tactical training, followed by specialized technical training at the Canadian Forces School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering in Borden, Ontario. Opportunities for advanced and specialized courses are available as career progresses. Part-time options This role is available for part-time service in the Primary Reserve across Canada, typically involving service one night a week and some weekends. Reserve members are paid, may serve full-time temporarily, and can volunteer for deployments.
