Project Description
We have a newly designed product consisting of low-voltage control circuitry (microcontrollers, relays, and associated electronics) that switches 120 VAC at approximately 1 amp.
The device is intended for installation within AC power cabinets supplying power to industrial equipment and machinery.
We are seeking an experienced subcontractor to:
Identify applicable safety and compliance standards
Evaluate the current design against those standards
Recommend necessary design, layout, or packaging changes to achieve compliance
The immediate goal is to prepare the product for eventual certification. Formal submission to a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) is not part of this scope.
Scope of Work
Review provided documentation:
Schematics
PCB layout (Gerbers or CAD files)
Bill of materials (BOM)
Mechanical/enclosure details
Identify applicable standards and clauses
Perform a pre-compliance assessment including:
Creepage and clearance analysis
Isolation strategy (low voltage vs. mains)
Relay and component ratings vs. load conditions
Protection methods (fusing, surge, grounding)
Thermal and fire risk considerations
Provide a written report including:
Compliance gaps
Specific corrective actions
Recommendations for redesign (if required)
Deliverables
Written pre-compliance report
Annotated schematics and/or layout comments
Actionable recommendations prioritized by risk and certification impact
Nice to Have
Prior experience working at or directly with:
Underwriters Laboratories
CSA Group
Experience with industrial control equipment or panel-mounted devices
Familiarity with NFPA (NEC / NFPA 70) considerations
Engagement Details
Remote work
NDA required prior to document sharing
Estimated duration: 1–3 weeks (depending on depth of review)
Potential follow-on work for design iteration and certification preparation
Required Qualifications
Professional Engineer (PE) license (U.S. preferred)
Direct, hands-on experience with electrical product safety standards
Demonstrated experience successfully taking at least one product through UL or Intertek (ETL) certification
Strong working knowledge of applicable UL / IEC standards (e.g., UL 508, UL 61010, UL 62368)
Experience performing pre-compliance design reviews (schematic + PCB + enclosure)
To Apply
Please include:
Summary of relevant compliance experience
List of standards you have worked with
Example(s) of products you have helped bring through UL/ETL certification
Any prior NRTL experience
