Electrical Engineer - Power System Studies

Job Description

We are looking for an Electrical Engineer who wants to build a serious power systems career on the projects that will define the next 10 years of the grid. You will work shoulder-to-shoulder with senior engineers on PSCAD modeling, transient stability analysis, protection studies, and reliability assessments for clients including major hyperscalers and SMR developers.

This is not a role where you watch from the sidelines. From day one, you will be in the model, in the data, and in the deliverable. We will train you, push you, and trust you with real responsibility; and we expect you to meet that with curiosity, ownership, and a willingness to do the hard work.

What You Will Work On

  • PSCAD modeling & EMT studies

— building, validating, and running electromagnetic transient models for AI data center loads, BESS (grid-forming and grid-following), synchronous condensers, and SMR-coupled systems.

  • Power systems analysis

— load flow, short circuit, dynamic stability, protection coordination, and RAM (reliability, availability, maintainability) studies in tools like PSS/E and ETAP.

  • Hyperscale data center projects

— supporting due diligence, system architecture, and protection studies for behind-the-meter generation platforms and islanded microgrids serving GPU-class loads.

  • SMR integration work

— modeling and controls integration for small modular reactor projects, including hybrid configurations with BESS, solar, and backup generation.

  • Client-facing deliverables

— drafting technical reports, study results, and findings that go directly to investment committees, hyperscaler engineering teams, and utility stakeholders.

  • Standards & research

— contributing to IEEE working group inputs, internal technical notes, and published thought leadership on emerging issues like SSR/SSO, harmonics, and AI load dynamics.

What We Are Looking For:

Required

  • BS in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems concentration strongly preferred).
  • 1–3 years of relevant experience — internships, co-ops, graduate research, or full-time roles in power systems, utility engineering, or generation/EPC environments all count.
  • Hands-on exposure to PSCAD or comparable EMT/dynamic simulation tools (PSS/E, ETAP, DIgSILENT). You don't need to be an expert — you need to have built models, debugged them, and learned from the result.
  • Solid fundamentals in three-phase power, per-unit analysis, symmetrical components, machine dynamics, and protection basics.
  • Strong written and verbal communication. You will write reports that clients read carefully.[NS1]

Nice to have

  • EIT certification or active path toward PE licensure.
  • Coursework or project experience with inverter-based resources, grid-forming controls, or HVDC.
  • Python, MATLAB, or scripting for model automation and post-processing.
  • Familiarity with IEEE 2800 and ERCOT, NERC and ATC large load requirements, different NERC MOD compliance.
  • Protection coordination expertise — relay settings, time-current curves, and experience with SEL or similar protection platforms.
  • Experience with ReliaSoft BlockSim or comparable RBD/RAM modeling tools for reliability and availability analysis.
  • Exposure to data center power topologies, microgrids, or nuclear power.

Who You Are

Beyond the credentials, we are looking for a specific kind of person:

  • Genuinely passionate about power systems.

You read about the grid for fun. You have opinions about inverter-based resources. You think the energy transition is the most interesting engineering problem of your generation.

  • Eager to put in the work.

You understand that becoming a strong power systems engineer takes years of deliberate practice. You are willing to wrestle with a PSCAD model at 9pm because you want to understand why it diverged.

  • A relentless learner.

You ask questions, take notes, and come back the next day having taught yourself the thing you didn't know. You see senior engineers as people to learn from, not just report to.

  • Detail-obsessed but pragmatic.

You sweat the right details — the ones that change the answer — and don't get lost in the ones that don't.

  • Ownership-minded.

When something is yours, it is yours. You don't need to be reminded twice.

  • Comfortable with ambiguity.

Cutting-edge work means the textbook answer often doesn't exist yet. You are excited by that, not paralyzed by it.
