Job Description

We are hiring an Electrical Engineer to own and improve the electrical system of a novel microwave spectroscopy platform. This is a hands‑on role that offers a high degree of autonomy and the opportunity to impact our product roadmap. You will work across hardware, firmware, software, and system‑level behavior. Day‑to‑day work ranges from debugging real hardware issues, to improving system performance, to contributing to new product development efforts.

Your role is to make it more robust, scalable, and easier to build, test, and support.

This role is best suited for someone who has an analytical mindset, thrives in a cross functional environment, and is looking to take on full system ownership in a complex, real‑world product environment.

Key Responsibilities

System Ownership

  • Act as the primary electrical owner of the instrument, responsible for system‑level performance, architecture understanding, and technical decision‑making
  • Develop a deep understanding of the instrument’s architecture, electrical subsystems and performance
  • Diagnose and resolve system‑level issues across hardware, communications (e.g., serial protocols), control systems, and signal behavior
  • Identify root causes and drive improvements to system stability and performance

Product Development & Execution

  • Define electrical requirements and system‑level architecture for new development efforts, and work with external partners to implement detailed PCB designs
  • Review schematics, layouts, and design outputs from external partners to ensure alignment with system requirements
  • Work from evolving requirements and help define practical paths forward
  • Take ownership of projects after initial ramp‑up

Test, Validation & Documentation

  • Develop, execute, and maintain subsystem and system‑level test procedures
  • Analyze results and translate findings into actionable improvements
  • Improve the clarity, structure, and usefulness of technical documentation

Build & Integration Support

  • Support instrument build, bring‑up, and validation activities
  • Perform board‑level modifications and assist in debugging hardware issues
  • Collaborate with external PCB design and manufacturing partners by defining requirements, reviewing designs, and supporting integration into the system
  • Validate and debug integrated hardware to ensure it meets system‑level performance expectations

Compliance & Regulatory

  • Support electrical and system‑level compliance efforts, including CE marking requirements
  • Contribute to documentation, testing, and design decisions required to meet applicable regulatory standards

Cross‑Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with mechanical engineering, software, and R&D teams
  • Operate effectively in a fast‑paced, cross‑functional environment

What Success Looks Like

  • You can independently diagnose and resolve system‑level issues across electrical subsystems
  • Test procedures and documentation become more structured and actionable
  • You are the go‑to technical owner for electrical system behavior and can drive issues to resolution without requiring detailed direction

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • 4–8+ years of relevant experience (or equivalent hands‑on experience)
  • Experience bringing a system from concept through build and validation
  • Hands‑on experience developing complex hardware systems
  • Ability to operate independently and translate marketing requirements into product requirements
  • Strong communication and documentation skills

Preferred

  • Experience with analytical or scientific instrumentation
  • Familiarity with RF systems (measurement or integration level; deep RF design not required)
  • Experience with embedded systems and communication protocols (UART, SPI, I2C, Modbus, etc.)
  • Experience working with external PCB design/manufacturing partners
  • Familiarity with regulatory compliance processes (e.g., CE marking, EMC considerations)

What Sets You Apart

  • You can break down complex systems and identify root causes of issues
  • You take ownership of problems and follow them through to resolution
  • You are comfortable working across hardware, software, and system boundaries
  • You can make progress even when not everything is fully defined

Work Profile

The distribution of work in this role will vary significantly depending on project phase, system maturity, and active priorities. As a general guideline work may include:

  • Debugging and system issue resolution (~20–40%)
  • Project and design work (~20–40%)
  • Testing and validation (~10–30%)

During active development or field issue resolution, time may skew heavily toward debugging and integration work.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary range: $120,000 – $130,000, with flexibility based on experience and demonstrated system‑level capability
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid time off

Location

  • Waltham, MA (on‑site)
