Job Description

The Energy Data Analyst Intern will support Harvard Business School's energy management program and Facilities department by advancing data-driven decision-making across campus operations. This role focuses on developing and enhancing business intelligence (BI) tools, improving data infrastructure, and contributing to energy and water performance optimization initiatives. The intern will work at the intersection of analytics, facilities operations, and sustainability, delivering actionable insights through dashboard development, workflow automation, and performance analysis, while gaining hands-on exposure to university campus energy management, facilities operations, skilled trades workflows, and broader campus infrastructure systems.

Responsibilities

Develop and improve BI dashboards and automate data input workflows

  • Develop BI dashboards for monthly utility variance reviews; water management; campus metering; portfolio performance benchmarks such as lead/lag, energy use intensities (EUIs) and water use intensities (WUIs); and sustainability reporting statistics.
  • Streamline and automate base layer data entry from a variety of data sources, including establishing API flows
  • Identify workflows that could be further automated to improve data collection and analysis
  • Make recommendations to improve reporting procedures and data visibility

Assist with campus energy management

  • Assist in preparation of monthly utility variance review meetings, including data analysis and in-field investigations of drivers of high utility usage
  • Support Clockworks fault detection and diagnostics program, including shadowing fault remediation tasks, attending meetings and proposing recommendations to better leverage Clockworks data
  • Assist in measurement & verification of completed energy conservation measures

Other projects, as assigned

  • Recommend improvements to metadata management for meters, irrigation valves, and miscellaneous facilities data
  • Research and recommend new ways to leverage AI tools given existing Facilities data and resources
  • Assist with asset inventory management, including aligning asset tagging workflow with ServiceNow work order platform
  • Support the preventative maintenance (PM) program, including alignment between traditional workflows and Clockworks automation

Qualifications, Education and/or Experience

  • Current enrollment in bachelor's degree or master's degree program in data science; engineering; energy management; environmental science; sustainability; or other related fields.
  • Strong analytical and technical data skills and ability to work with large data sets.
  • Experience working with BI and data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, or similar); familiarity with APIs or data integration methods preferred.
  • Experience in energy efficiency engineering within commercial or industrial buildings.
  • Experience optimizing building energy systems through utilization of Energy
  • Management Systems, energy audits and data analysis.
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Attention to detail is a must.
