We’re looking for an Engineering Manager (DevEx) to join our London team. In this role, you’ll lead the Local DevEx team to build a world-class, automated development environment that empowers thousands of engineers to ship high-quality code with zero friction. This role is based in our London office with a hybrid setup, typically 3 days in the office.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

You’ll be joining the Local DevEx team within our Foundations group. We own the "paved path" for how engineers at Deliveroo and across the wider DoorDash group develop, test, and ship services using DevContainers, remote IDEs, and agentic AI workflows.

Here’s what your day-to-day might look like:

• Define the Paved Path: Evolve "DevBox" as our primary development platform, overseeing remote VM lifecycles, JetBrains remote backends, and seamless onboarding UX.

• Drive Technical Excellence: Partner with Staff Engineers to review complex designs (TDDs) and PRs, ensuring our internal tooling meets the highest standards of reliability and security.

• Lead AI Integration: Own the productisation of AI-assisted tooling (like Claude Code) and MCP connectors, balancing developer velocity with IP safety and privacy.

• Operational Ownership: Set the bar for SLOs, on-call rotations, and incident response, ensuring our internal platform is as resilient as our customer-facing ones.

• People Leadership: Manage, coach, and mentor a high-performing team of engineers, fostering a culture of psychological safety, high trust, and continuous career growth.

• Stakeholder Alignment: Represent the team in group-wide planning, navigating trade-offs and communicating roadmaps to Product, Security, and SRE partners.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO THRIVE

Essential

• Proven Engineering Leadership: Demonstrated experience managing high-performing teams and a track record of delivering complex production systems.

• Infrastructure Expertise: Significant experience with devcontainer workflows, remote IDE orchestration (JetBrains/IntelliJ), or Firecracker-style VM snapshotting.

• Tooling & Automation: Strong background in building developer CLIs or workstation automation using Go, Python, or TypeScript.

• Security & Networking: Deep understanding of secure access patterns (VPNs/Tailscale), secrets management (Vault), and managed software distribution.

• Operational Rigour: Proven ability to drive operational excellence through SLOs, robust monitoring, and post-incident preventative work.

Nice to Have

• Experience with LLM-assisted developer tooling and "safe-by-design" AI implementation.

• Familiarity with remote execution and caching patterns such as BuildBuddy.
