THE ROLE

As an Engineering Manager for Baseten's Platform Team, you will lead and grow the team responsible for building internal systems to reduce low leverage work for the entire engineering organization. While our product delivers infrastructure for AI development, your team's focus is on creating robust internal systems that amplify productivity, collaboration, and quality across all engineering teams through exceptional tooling, efficient workflows, AI enablement, and world-class development environments.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Team Leadership & Culture

  • Recruit, hire, and develop a high-performing team of platform engineers.
  • Foster a culture of technical excellence, psychological safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide regular coaching, feedback, and career development support to your direct reports.
  • Partner with tech leads and engineering leadership to define the long-term vision and roadmap for platform infrastructure.

Technical Direction

  • Guide the team in creating diverse tooling tailored to the needs of different engineering teams.
  • Oversee the enhancement of monorepo capabilities and development of project templates for consistency and efficiency.
  • Drive the design and implementation of shared libraries focused on observability.
  • Champion improvements to the speed, reliability, and comprehensiveness of CI pipelines.
  • Provide a strong platform for high-quality agentic development across the organization.
  • Ensure the team delivers innovative solutions that improve visibility in continuous delivery (CD) processes.

Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Act as the primary advocate for platform engineering across the organization, ensuring teams have the resources and tools to stay productive.
  • Collaborate with product and engineering stakeholders to prioritize platform investments based on business impact.
  • Communicate team progress, priorities, and technical trade-offs clearly to leadership.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Proven experience managing and growing engineering teams, ideally in a platform, infrastructure, or developer experience context.
  • Strong technical background in Go and/or Python, with the ability to engage credibly in code reviews and architectural discussions.
  • Hands-on experience with Kubernetes/Docker tooling (e.g., Helm, Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Experience managing and working within large monorepos; bonus points for familiarity with tools such as Bazel, Pants, Moon, or Turborepo.
  • Advanced understanding of CI/CD concepts and a track record of improving developer experience at scale.
  • Excellent developer tool culture with a focus on best practices; bonus points if you or your team has contributed to open-source developer tooling.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence without authority across teams.
