Founding Electrical / Embedded Systems Engineer

Anaco
Los Angeles, US
On-site

Job Description

We’re looking for a 1-of-1 Electrical/Embedded Systems Engineer to join our founding team and start the most exciting, challenging, and rewarding role of your career.

IMPORTANT: Application instructions are at the bottom of the description.

Anaco is currently building Tinylab, the world’s smallest industrial laboratory. Your job will be to lead the development of Tinylab’s electronics.

Tinylab’s hardware architecture combines 24 parallel microreactors (each with independent heating, cooling, pressure control, and electrochemical sensors), 0.5 uL accuracy microfluidic pumping, programmable vaporization up to 300C, split flow control, parallel triple-column gas chromatography, pneumatic-modulated flow cells, and multi-spectral (UV, Vis, NIR) spectroscopy. Each sub-module has unique controls, signals, functions, and protocols.

Not only will you be integrating over 100 thermocouples, heaters, valves, sensors, spectrometers, lights, and other components into a single compact unit, but since many of our core components are fabricated in-house, you will also be creating the direct link (circuitry) of bits to atoms- no SDKs here.

We believe in investing in our community: We aim for Tinylabs to be 100% made in the USA, which requires some clever outside-the-box thinking due to component availability stateside.

Here are some things you will be expected to do (there may be more you end up working on):

  • Correct and improve current circuit designs
  • Implement low-noise analog-to-digital conversion (ADC)
  • Design and validate new PCB layouts and schematics
  • Unify electronic architecture
  • Create and maintain documentation
  • Develop drivers for diverse communication protocols
  • Collaborate with the microfabrication (chipmaking) team
  • Test and calibrate components
  • Design and make control firmware/software
  • Improve algorithms and optimize signal integrity

This is an in-person job at our HQ inside the California NanoSystems Institute, a state-of-the-art facility in Los Angeles, CA that features a 20,000 square foot Class 10 nanofabrication and chipmaking cleanroom, additive manufacturing capabilities, multiple electronics stations, chemical & materials processing equipment, and more.

We also aim to foster creativity and innovation by allowing our engineers to stay late or come in on weekends to work on side projects using some of the unique resources we have available. Products spun out of these projects may receive funding through Anaco, depending on their merit and connection to the core business.

Must-have skills and qualifications:

  • Programming languages: C (or C++), Python
  • EDA/Layout Software: KiCAD (ideal), Altium (acceptable)
  • Can build things from the ground up (0->1)
  • Exemplary understanding/ability of Control Theory, Inter-system Communication, and Memory Management.

Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Embedded Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related field AND 4+ years of experience, OR
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Embedded Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related field AND 2+ years of experience, OR
  • 8+ years of experience in Electrical Engineering, Embedded Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related field (no educational requirement).

Skills/Experience that will make you stand out:

  • Previous experience developing gas chromatography or NIR spectroscopy systems
  • Complex projects that you have built 0->1
  • Having an organized, methodical nature
  • Knowledge of chemistry, chromatography, spectroscopy, etc.
  • Photonics/Optical engineering skills
  • Experience using Generative AI design tools (such as Flux)
  • Undergraduate GPA >3.85

Compensation:

  • $85,000 - $145,000 salary per year, depending on skills, fit, and experience.
  • Various benefits packages, including vision, dental, and health insurance, retirement account, continuing education, profit sharing, and other plans are available.
  • Equity compensation will be based on contributions, experience, and commitment exhibited during a 90-day paid trial period.

Our process:

  • Manual application review
  • Screening Phone Call (10-15 minutes)
  • Video Call (30-45 minutes)
  • Technical Assessment (Written)
  • On-site Interview (45-90 minutes)

Please submit a resume and project portfolio to bliker@anaco.com for consideration.
