Position Summary
This Fundamental Trading Analyst supports MPC’s Global Supply, Trading, and Origination organization by delivering high-impact freight market analytics that directly inform commercial decision making. The role is responsible for end-to-end fundamental analysis, including global supply-demand balances, vessel and fleet dynamics, flow patterns, and freight economics, and converts complex market signals into timely, actionable insights embedded within trading workflows.
This position is designed as a key analytics role with direct proximity to trading activity, requiring strong commercial judgment, analytical ownership, and close collaboration with traders, schedulers, and origination teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage global freight supply-demand models, including flows, demand, inventories, fleet supply, and freight pricing relationships.
- Monitor vessel movements, trade route shifts, fleet utilization, and structural market changes impacting freight markets.
- Ensure accuracy, consistency, and integrity across assigned market databases, models, and reporting outputs.
- Analyze freight economics, arbitrage structures, voyage comparisons, and coverage strategies; deliver ad-hoc analytics based on current market conditions.
- Provide timely intelligence and forward-looking insights to trading, scheduling, and origination teams.
- Highlight market risks, dislocations, and emerging opportunities in both physical and paper freight markets.
- Support Supply Trading and Origination in identifying new commercial opportunities and evolving market dislocations.
- Translate complex market dynamics into clear, actionable strategies using modeling, visualization, and analytical tools.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance, Marketing, Economics, Engineering, Marine or related discipline required.
- Three (3) or more years of related experience.
Preferred Experience
- Working knowledge of commodity and freight supply-demand fundamentals, including production, refining, inventories, and global trade patterns.
- Experience analyzing commodity or freight market differentials, quality impacts, and regional pricing benchmarks
- Exposure to freight markets (tankers, dry bulk, or LNG/LPG) or similar physical logistics/supply chain analytics.
- Strong proficiency in analytical modeling, scenario analysis, and visualization tools
- Familiarity with data visualization or analytical tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or similar platforms
- Experience working with large datasets (AIS, market data feeds, pricing services) and translating them into commercial insights.
- Ability to communicate analytical findings clearly to commercial stakeholders.
