Head of Risk

Tarvos Talent is partnering with a well-established, highly respected organization within the oil & gas / commodities trading industry to identify a Head of Risk. This is a key leadership opportunity to build and lead a global risk function within a fast-paced physical trading environment.

This role is based in Houston and requires a local, in-office presence, offering direct exposure to executive leadership and trading teams.

Overview:

This individual will be responsible for leading the firm’s risk strategy across market, credit, and operational risk, with a strong focus on physical commodities trading. You’ll partner closely with traders and leadership to evaluate exposures, optimize risk-adjusted returns, and implement scalable frameworks to support continued growth.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead enterprise-wide risk management across market, credit, and operational risk
• Monitor exposure across crude, refined products, and physical trading positions
• Develop and enhance risk frameworks, policies, and controls
• Partner with trading teams on deal structuring, hedging, and risk analysis
• Oversee credit risk, counterparty exposure, and credit limits
• Build reporting tools to track P&L volatility and risk metrics
• Ensure compliance with internal and regulatory requirements
• Present risk insights to executive leadership
• Build and mentor a growing risk team

Qualifications:

• 10+ years of risk management experience within oil & gas, energy, or commodities trading
• Strong understanding of physical trading, derivatives, and hedging strategies
• Experience across both market and credit risk
• Proven ability to build or scale a risk function
• Strong analytical and communication skills
