Job Description

HGA is seeking an I&E Project Engineer - Control Engineering to support capital and operational projects for large-scale plant and pipeline facilities. This role focuses on the engineering, design, and implementation of process control systems, safety systems, and instrumentation upgrades. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership across project development, execution, and commissioning while collaborating closely with operations, engineering, and contractors.

This position is ideal for a self-driven controls engineer with strong hands-on design experience and a deep understanding of electrical and instrumentation systems in industrial environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support for process control, instrumentation, and measurement technologies across multiple projects.
  • Engineer and design control system upgrades, including PLC-based systems, Burner Management Systems (BMS), and shutdown/safety systems.
  • Support development of project scope, engineering deliverables, cost estimates, and construction plans.
  • Apply industry standards and best practices for regulatory control and safety systems.
  • Participate in operational and system training related to control and instrumentation technologies.
  • Collaborate with operations, engineering teams, and contractors to ensure safe and effective project execution.
  • Support commissioning activities, loop checks, startup, and final project closeout documentation.

Engineering & Design Deliverables

Candidates must be able to independently complete at least 75% of the following tasks:

  • P&ID redlines for control scope
  • Instrument location plans
  • Electrical area classification drawings
  • Facility key plans
  • Instrument datasheets and installation details
  • Cable conduit schedules
  • Cable tray and conduit routing design
  • Construction scope documents and plans
  • Loop checks, startup, and commissioning support
  • As-built documentation and project sign-off
  • Instrument index maintenance
  • Loop drawing verification

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5+ years of experience implementing process control systems and I&E functions for plant and/or pipeline facilities.
  • Strong working knowledge of industry standards, including NFPA 70E, NFPA 87, API RP 500, ISA, and IEC.
  • Proficiency in PLC-based control system design, relay logic, and motor control schematics.
  • Experience developing cable tray layouts, conduit routing, and cable schedules.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety systems, burner management equipment, and implementation best practices.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks independently while collaborating across teams.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Physically able to perform light work, lift up to 20 lbs, climb ladders, and work in field environments as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Honeywell C300 systems, Triconex CX safety systems, and Allen Bradley PLCs.
  • Engineering degree (Electrical, Instrumentation, Controls, or related discipline).
  • Prior experience supporting capital projects in midstream, refining, chemical, or industrial facilities.

  • Travel: Up to 25% (various project locations)
