UC San Diego Health is seeking an Intelligent Automation Engineer (Epic & Workflow Integration) to design, build, configure, and optimize intelligent automation agents across enterprise platforms including Notable Health, Epic Agent Factory, UiPath, and related orchestration systems. This role focuses on integrating intelligent automation within Epic and related clinical systems, including workflow design, configuration, and bidirectional integration between Epic and external automation platforms. The engineer works with the Intelligent Automation Product Manager to translate operational use cases into production‑ready automation agents that integrate across multimodal environments and are embedded into clinical and operational workflows. This role builds enterprise‑scale, AI‑enabled, cross‑platform automation and decision systems that extend beyond traditional RPA to include agentic, event‑driven, and workflow‑integrated automation across multiple platforms.

The engineer collaborates with clinical and operational stakeholders to deploy automation solutions that drive measurable efficiency gains and sustained system‑wide impact. This is a senior technical role requiring deep expertise in Epic applications and workflow integration, with the ability to lead complex automation initiatives involving EHR systems.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design, build, configure, and optimize intelligent automation agents across Epic and related platforms.
- Develop workflow‑driven automation that integrates with Epic, Notable Health, UiPath, and external systems.
- Collaborate with data scientists, product managers, cloud engineers, and enterprise platform specialists.
- Translate operational use cases into production‑ready automation and embed automation into clinical and operational workflows.
- Implement human‑in‑the‑loop controls, safe failure handling, auditability, and risk alignment.
- Contribute to governance, monitoring, performance optimization, and coordination of cross‑platform workflows.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Eleven (11) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus seven (7) years of related experience/training. Related experience includes software engineering, cloud application development, enterprise systems integration, intelligent automation platform configuration, API design and development, or related technical disciplines in healthcare or similarly complex enterprise environments.
- Expert knowledge of secure software development.
- Expert skills in software design, development and deployment of diverse and complex software at campus/multi‑institute scope.
- Demonstrated ability to code software of high complexity and derive algorithms on technical platforms.
- Demonstrated ability to engage in performance/integration testing, data analysis and data modeling of high complexity.
- Expert skills in recommending changes to development, maintenance and software standards and processes.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate with executive‑level management.
- Experienced mentor and leader of software development teams.
- Demonstrated ability to understand functional needs and how systems support those needs.
- Demonstrated ability to develop conversion and system implementation plans.
- Expert experience with identification and use of code libraries and open‑source resources.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience designing and optimizing end‑to‑end clinical or operational workflows within Epic, including integration of external automation tools into existing user workflows.
- Experience managing exception handling and fallback pathways within clinical workflows for safe and reliable production automation.
- Familiarity with Epic upgrade cycles, release management, and change control in large health systems.
- Experience balancing workflow efficiency with user experience and adoption.
- Experience working within governance structures for clinical systems.
- Strong intelligent automation engineering discipline across platforms (Notable Health, Epic Agent Factory, UiPath).
