Job Posting - Payroll & Finance Officer

The Society of United Professionals, IFPTE Local 160, is seeking a Payroll & Finance Officer. This position is responsible for payroll, benefits and release time processing, as well as shared responsibility for other financial activities including accounts payable, accounts receivable, account reconciliation and the production of financial reports.

This is a one-year temporary unionized position. The job is based on a 35-hour week, Monday to Friday, with an infrequent requirement for evening and weekend work.

The successful applicant will have a minimum of:

  • Degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field.
  • A Payroll Compliance Professional (PCP) or Payroll Leadership Professional (PLP) awarded by the National Payroll Institute is required.
  • CPA designation is preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of directly related experience, including hands-on experience processing payroll and benefits.

The successful applicant will also have abilities and experience in the following areas:

  • Demonstrated competence in using financial data software (payroll system and accounting system).
  • Attention to detail to ensure accuracy and timeliness of data entered and manipulated.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with union staff, members and officers.
  • Ability to convey information, provide clear and detailed explanations, and resolve questions.
  • Maintain confidentiality in dealing with sensitive Society information.

Key duties include:

  • Process payroll and benefits (weekly and monthly payroll, calculations (leaves, terminations, salary increases, etc.), benefit and pension enrollment and submissions, compliance requirements (T4s, T4As, taxable benefits, ROEs, etc.), reconciliations) and respond to inquiries.
  • Enter financial data into forms/systems and prepare monthly account reconciliations (capital assets, investments, HST, etc.).
  • Produce a range of routine financial reports as directed, using Great Plains and other software applications.
  • Carry out investigations and analysis as directed.
  • Maintain accounts receivable (process and analyze revenue) and payable (process and analyze expenses).
  • Assist others with submitting expenses or completing forms relating to expenses.
  • Archive and retrieve records.
  • Backup for the Finance Officer.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This is a temporary, unionized position, located in midtown Toronto, with the possibility of some remote work. The salary range for the position is $133,744 to $157,352 per year, based on a 35-hour workweek, with the occasional need for evening and weekend work. The position also includes a competitive pension and benefits plan.
