Position: Junior Research Scientist (PI: Dr. Kara Margolis)

Location: New York

Position available for one full-time junior research scientist to join my laboratory, studying the biology of the enteric nervous system (ENS) and the role of the gut and gut to brain signaling in brain-gut axis disorders. The candidates will work closely with the PI and other lab members in the design and implementation of experiments that use mouse genetic models to investigate the role of ENS and epithelial development in gastrointestinal function, motility, inflammatory bowel disease and mood and neurobehavioral disorders.

This position requires a bright, self-motivated and organized individual who is quick to learn new techniques, and feels comfortable working independently as well as with others. Some evening and weekend work will be necessary. A minimum of a two-year commitment required.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $40,000 to $47,500. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

Primary job responsibilities

Perform experiments and maintain the mouse colony (breeding, genotyping, and administering treatments to genetically-modified mice). Experiments will involve mouse dissection, molecular biology, immunohistochemistry, qPCR, immunoblotting, FACS, confocal microscopy, GI motility studies, studies to assess for nociception and behavioral studies. Other responsibilities will include ordering supplies, maintenance of stock reagents, and management of lab expenditures.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.
  • The ideal candidate will have spent some time in a basic science laboratory in the past and worked with mouse models or has a distinct desire to work with mice.

  • Facility with Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with written and spoken English.
  • Excellent team player.
  • Candidate must feel comfortable with the handling and dissection of laboratory mice.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the study of the physiology of the enteric and/or central nervous systems, experience with IPSCs, skills in AI.
