Role Overview

As a Lead Applied Scientist focused on Generative AI, you will be pivotal in designing, developing, and deploying machine learning models that drive the next wave of AI-driven capabilities at Relativity. Your collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of applied scientists, engineers, product managers, and designers will enable the creation of models that empower legal professionals in their pursuit of truth and organization of data.

This role strikes a balance between research, development, and operational responsibilities. You will contribute significantly to our portfolio of transformative generative AI technologies while aligning with our commitment to responsible AI practices and ensuring the reliability of models in high-stakes settings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement machine learning and generative AI models as customer-facing features.
  • Collaborate with engineers to write production-quality code and engage in the complete model deployment lifecycle.
  • Design and evaluate large-scale models for search and retrieval systems managing hundreds of millions to billions of documents.
  • Establish internal standards and processes for the creation and deployment of generative AI systems.
  • Work alongside Product and Data teams to curate and synthesize datasets for model training and evaluation.
  • Conduct comprehensive experimentation and iteration to enhance model quality, safety, and performance.
  • Coordinate with AI, engineering, and product teams to ensure effective model integration into larger systems.
  • Adhere to Relativity's AI Principles to cultivate responsible, fair, secure, and transparent AI development.
  • Articulate complex data science and machine learning concepts clearly and inclusively to diverse stakeholders.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Proven experience in building search or retrieval systems handling large volumes of documents.
  • Experience in developing generative AI models within extensive domain-specific systems.
  • A thorough understanding of the entire machine learning lifecycle, from experimentation to deployment.
  • Familiarity with containerized environments and Kubernetes workflows.
  • Interest in or experience working within the legal industry, eDiscovery, or the broader justice system.
  • Strong programming skills in a language such as Python.
  • Comfort in UNIX-based environments and using command-line tools.
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts to a wide range of stakeholders effectively.

Preferred:

  • Master's degree in Computer Science or a related quantitative field with 2 years of relevant industry experience.
  • OR Ph.D. in Computer Science or a quantitative field.
  • OR equivalent of 5 years of relevant academic and/or industry experience.
  • Experience with large language model systems and deployment.
  • Involvement in developing shared data science or ML engineering standards and tooling.

Compensation and Benefits

This position offers competitive total compensation including a base salary, an annual performance bonus, and long-term incentives. The expected salary range is between $146,000 and $218,000, determined by factors such as experience, skill set, qualifications, and internal equity.
