Our client, a pioneering force in the specialty chemicals sector, is seeking a highly experienced Lead Chemical Process Engineer to join their advanced research and development division. This critical role is based at our state-of-the-art facility in **San Francisco, California**. The successful candidate will drive innovation in chemical process design, optimization, and scale-up for novel chemical products.
The Lead Chemical Process Engineer will be responsible for leading the design and implementation of chemical processes from laboratory to pilot and commercial scale. This includes process simulation, P&ID development, equipment selection, safety analysis (HAZOP), and process troubleshooting. You will play a pivotal role in improving process efficiency, ensuring product quality, and maintaining the highest standards of safety and environmental compliance.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the design, development, and optimization of chemical manufacturing processes. Perform process simulations using industry-standard software (e.g., Aspen Plus, HYSYS). Develop Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs). Specify and select process equipment, considering performance, cost, and safety requirements. Conduct hazard and operability studies (HAZOP) and other risk assessments. Oversee pilot plant operations and scale-up activities, ensuring successful technology transfer. Troubleshoot process deviations and implement corrective actions to improve efficiency and yield. Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory standards. Collaborate with cross-functional teams including R&D, manufacturing, and quality assurance. Mentor and guide junior process engineers. Stay current with advancements in chemical engineering technologies and methodologies. Prepare technical reports, documentation, and presentations.
The ideal candidate will hold a Master's degree or Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering. A minimum of 8-10 years of progressive experience in chemical process engineering, with a strong emphasis on R&D, pilot plant operations, and scale-up is required. Proven experience in process design, simulation, and troubleshooting is essential. Expertise in safety analysis and regulatory compliance within the chemical industry is mandatory. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills are necessary. Strong leadership and team collaboration abilities are required. Proficiency in process simulation software and CAD tools is expected. Experience in specialty chemicals or advanced materials is highly desirable.
