Job Description

Job Description

Join our innovative Mapping organization as we develop advanced mapping technologies that utilize automated, machine learning-driven reconstruction methods based on onboard sensor data. This work is foundational for enhancing localization, perception, simulation, and autonomy on a national scale.

The Role

We are seeking a passionate Lead Machine Learning Engineer to spearhead automated map reconstruction initiatives within our Mapping Engineering team. In this dynamic position, you will design and deliver comprehensive machine learning and computer vision pipelines that reconstruct, validate, and enhance essential map elements (e.g., lanes, boundaries, traffic controls, signs) using extensive sensor data. Your contributions will play a vital role in creating next-generation maps capable of adapting reliably to various road conditions nationwide.

This is a hands-on technical leadership position where you will work independently and define the technical direction in complex and uncertain problem areas. You will lead collaborative projects involving cross-functional teams from Mapping, Perception, Localization, Simulation, and Infrastructure. Mentorship is also a key aspect of this role as you assist senior engineers in elevating the organization’s machine learning and computer vision capabilities.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

  • Architect and oversee ML-driven map reconstruction systems that use multi-modal sensor data (camera, lidar, radar, vehicle signals) on a national scale.
  • Design and implement end-to-end pipelines for offline map reconstruction including data extraction, labeling processes, model training, evaluation, and production deployment.
  • Establish the technical strategy and architecture for next-generation mapping capabilities, balancing innovation with robustness, safety, and operational scalability.
  • Champion the integration of cutting-edge computer vision and ML techniques (e.g., detection, segmentation, 3D reconstruction, BEV representations) into mapping processes.
  • Lead cross-disciplinary technical projects, collaborating closely with Perception, Localization, Simulation, and Platform teams to define interfaces, data contracts, and integration methodologies.
  • Drive excellence in technical processes through design reviews, mentorship, and guidance for senior engineers across teams.
  • Identify and resolve system-wide challenges across data pipelines, ML models, and operational workflows.
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for machine learning-based mapping and reconstruction within Mapping and the broader AV organization.
  • Contribute to the development of technical roadmaps, recruitment strategies, and capability enhancement in ML and computer vision expertise across the Mapping organization.

Minimum Qualifications (Must-Have)

  • 5+ years of experience in developing and deploying machine learning or computer vision systems in production settings.
  • A strong foundation in computer vision, machine learning, or robotics, with hands-on expertise in designing and training ML models.
  • Proficiency in Python for ML development; familiarity with C++ or similar systems languages is advantageous.
  • Experience in building large-scale data pipelines for ML, covering dataset curation, labeling processes, training, and evaluation.
  • Proven capability to lead complex, cross-functional technical projects with a high degree of autonomy and influential impact.
  • A BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Strong systems thinking skills with the ability to conceptualize and understand end-to-end ML systems beyond single models.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Have)

  • Experience with mapping, localization, perception, or robotics systems, especially in autonomous driving or mobile robotics.
  • Hands-on experience with 3D perception, BEV representations, or multi-view geometry.
  • Familiarity with AV sensor data (camera, lidar, radar) and real-world challenges such as noise, drift, and long-tail scenarios.
  • Experience in deploying ML models into production systems, including monitoring, validation, and iterative improvement processes.
  • Exposure to simulation-based validation, synthetic data generation, or workflow for map change detection.
  • Experience mentoring senior engineers or acting as a technical lead within and across teams.
