Job Description

About the Team

DoorDash Labs is an innovative team within DoorDash that is dedicated to exploring robotics and automation to revolutionize last mile logistics. If you are passionate about implementing robotics solutions in a service utilized by millions, we would love to hear from you!

About the Role

As a Lead Motor Control Engineer, your primary responsibility will be to design and test advanced control algorithms for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) using state-of-the-art model-based design methodologies. You will integrate these algorithms with the complete powertrain system of our delivery robots. Your role will also involve meticulous testing of the powertrain’s performance across multiple levels including component testing on dynamometers, simulations, and real-world road testing, while continuously seeking to enhance development processes, testing methodologies, and overall robot performance.

You're excited about this opportunity because you will:

  • Design and implement field-oriented control (FOC) for PMSM and low-level diagnostic algorithms using MATLAB and Simulink.
  • Tune control algorithms to optimize powertrain performance through closed-loop simulation, dyno testing, and operational testing of robots.
  • Create and maintain infrastructure for verifying control laws and algorithms systematically using Simulink Test.
  • Proactively design features and processes that exceed the expectations of internal customers such as robot operations, field service, autonomy software stack, and hardware.
  • Identify and tackle new challenges, acquiring new skills and knowledge as needed.

What we're looking for:

  • BS/MS degree in Power Electronics, Electrical, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience developing and testing control algorithms for PMSM.
  • Hands-on experience of 3+ years in building complex mechatronic systems within automotive, aerospace, or autonomous vehicles.
  • Strong understanding of power electronics circuits pertaining to motor controls, including gate drivers and inverters.
  • Ability to read and review board schematics and understand basic electronics.
  • Proficient in using laboratory instruments for troubleshooting motor control issues.
  • Expertise in model-based design techniques using MATLAB/Simulink/Stateflow and robust knowledge of essential robotics or mechatronics principles, such as feedback control, sensors, actuators, embedded controllers, and CAN communication.
  • Working knowledge of C and experience with auto-code generation via Embedded Coder.
  • Familiarity with source control management and build automation tools such as Git and Jenkins.

Nice to have:

  • Familiarity with C++/Python.
  • Experience in constructing physical models of mechatronic systems for simulation purposes.
  • Knowledge of sensorless estimation algorithms.
  • In-depth understanding of electric powertrain dynamics and vehicle road dynamics.
  • Commitment to a principled and thorough testing methodology for safety-critical systems.
  • Ability to document designs and processes clearly and comprehensively.

Compensation

The successful candidate's starting pay will be within the range of $134,000 - $197,000 USD, determined by various factors including skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. In addition to a competitive base salary, the role includes opportunities for equity grants.

DoorDash values the well-being of its employees, offering a full suite of benefits for all regular employees, including a 401(k) plan with employer matching, 16 weeks of paid parental leave, wellness programs, commuter benefits matching, paid time off, and sick leave as per applicable laws. Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans, 11 paid holidays, disability insurance, family-forming assistance, and mental health support are also included.

See below for paid time off details:

  • For salaried roles: flexible paid time off/vacation, plus 80 hours of paid sick time per year.
  • For hourly roles: vacation accrued at approximately 1 hour for every 25.97 hours worked and sick time accrued at 1 hour for every 30 hours worked.
