A leading global firm is seeking a Senior AI Engineer to join their team on a 12-month contract, with the possibility of extension. This role offers you the opportunity to work at the forefront of AI-driven professional skilling and capability development, leveraging large language model technology. You will be involved from day one in shaping, building, and delivering innovative AI solutions that combine proprietary knowledge with advanced machine learning techniques.
What You'll Do
- Collaborate closely with product and knowledge leadership teams to refine and validate the technical architecture for cutting-edge AI skilling solutions, ensuring robust design before build commences.
- Make and document critical technical decisions covering cloud infrastructure setup, integration patterns for large language models (LLMs), API design strategies, data architecture frameworks, vector store configuration, and security protocols.
- Produce comprehensive technical specifications that guide external vendor teams in their builds, while providing hands-on oversight to ensure delivery aligns with requirements.
- Establish coding standards, review processes, and architectural guardrails that maintain quality and protect intellectual property throughout the build phase.
- Design and implement LLM integration patterns including retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines, model-agnostic abstraction layers, and prompt engineering frameworks tailored for scalable deployment.
- Ensure all security, data governance, and privacy requirements are correctly implemented by overseeing encryption standards, tenant isolation mechanisms, RBAC policies, and GDPR compliance.
- Identify and manage technical risks across the entire delivery lifecycle by proactively addressing potential issues as they arise.
- Contribute thought leadership to broader organisational discussions on how AI-based solutions should be architected as technology evolves within the professional development space.
- Oversee external development vendors by reviewing their progress against technical specifications and maintaining rigorous quality assurance standards.
- Engage with stakeholders across multiple initiatives depending on business needs, adapting your approach to suit varying project scopes.
What You'll Need
- More than 8 years of experience in software engineering with at least 2 years hands-on experience building and delivering production-ready products based on large language models (LLMs).
- Direct experience implementing retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) architectures, prompt engineering techniques, vector databases such as Azure AI Search or Pinecone, and LLM evaluation frameworks.
- Proven ability to make informed architecture decisions regarding cloud infrastructure (Azure preferred), API design strategies, microservices deployment models, containerisation approaches, and data architecture frameworks.
- Experience producing detailed technical specifications for external vendors and overseeing their delivery against those requirements.
- Hands-on proficiency with LLM APIs including Anthropic Claude, OpenAI GPT-4 or Google Gemini
