About the role

Original posting from Discord via Greenhouse

Discord is used by over 200 million people every month for many different reasons, but there’s one thing that nearly everyone does on our platform: play video games. Over 90% of our users play games, spending a combined 1.5 billion hours playing thousands of unique titles on Discord each month. Discord plays a uniquely important role in the future of gaming. We are focused on making it easier and more fun for people to talk and hang out before, during, and after playing games.

Discord is looking for an experienced Litigation Counsel to join Discord’s Legal team. Reporting to the Director, Global Litigation and working closely with two Senior Litigation Counsels, you’ll join a lean team where every team member carries real responsibility from day one. We're looking for an experienced litigator who can operate independently across a broad range of matters, with the judgment to triage, strategize, and execute on a diverse caseload. You'll own the individual consumer claims docket, support discovery and briefing on high-stakes matters, and manage IP litigation, all while working closely with cross-functional partners to protect Discord's platform and users.

What you'll be doing

Own and manage Discord's individual consumer claims docket end-to-end, including consumer arbitrations, state attorney general individual consumer complaints, and Digital Services Act (DSA) complaints

Partner with litigation teammates on high-stakes matters, including regulatory inquiries, putative class actions, and other complex disputes

Take ownership of discovery workstreams on major matters, including managing document review, coordinating with internal teams on custodian identification and data preservation, drafting and responding to written discovery, and preparing witnesses for depositions

Manage trademark, copyright, and other IP litigation matters, including matters involving DMCA-related disputes.

Contribute to the team's broader efforts to continuously improve in areas of regulatory and enforcement focus, including minor safety, content moderation, and platform liability

Serve as a versatile member of a lean litigation team, willing to pitch in on matters outside core areas of focus when priorities shift or volume requires it

What you should have

J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar admission in at least one U.S. jurisdiction

7+ years of combined experience at a law firm and/or in-house legal department, with meaningful exposure to technology or consumer-facing platforms

Hands-on experience with the full eDiscovery lifecycle, including preservation, collection, processing, review, and production

Hands-on litigation experience in consumer litigation as well as global copyright, trademark, and related intellectual property matters.

Ability to navigate legal issues with a practical and commercially sensible mindset

Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to tailor the message to the audience—whether engineers, executives, or outside counsel

Ability to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously, prioritize effectively, and consistently deliver results

Nice to Have

You are familiar with Discord and the video game and/or online communication industry

In-house experience at a consumer-facing technology platform

Experience with regulatory, platform safety, minor safety, privacy, consumer protection matters, internet platform liability (including CDA 230), and multi-district litigations (and/or state coordinated proceedings).

Experience managing consumer arbitration portfolios at scale

Familiarity with patent litigation

Background in gaming, social media, or communications technologies
