Refining Engineer Manager - Instrumentation
Job Summary
The Marathon Los Angeles Refinery is seeking a dynamic individual for the role of Refining Engineer Manager. In this pivotal position, you will lead a team of Instrument engineers providing technical support and development to ensure successful project implementation and daily operational needs at our Carson/Wilmington Refineries. This full-time role operates on a 9/80 schedule, requiring occasional after-hours support and participation in turnaround activities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee and guide the development and execution of engineering and construction projects ensuring alignment with business objectives and timely delivery.
- Direct and manage team members in design and construction management while focusing on operational efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness.
- Strategically allocate workloads and ensure project completion within budgetary constraints, adapting to the changing needs of refinery operations.
- Mentor and develop engineers through coaching, creating training plans, and fostering a culture of innovation for project assignments.
- Monitor project progress and communicate financial and schedule statuses to all relevant stakeholders.
- Promote a collaborative service-oriented approach across teams, ensuring thorough support for safety and operational needs.
- Manage the integration of college co-op students within your team to promote learning and development.
- Facilitate the budgeting process by providing accurate project data to meet deadlines.
- Interface effectively with various departments to resolve issues and leverage relationships for project success.
Education, Experience, and Skills:
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a related field is required.
- A minimum of eight (8) years of engineering experience in refinery, petro-chemical, or heavy industry is essential.
- A strong aptitude for instrumentation, alongside excellent communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills, is necessary.
- Proficiency with industrial instrumentation systems, industry codes and standards, and a solid understanding of Safety Instrumented Systems is important.
- Knowledge of Management of Change (MOC), Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), and Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) as they pertain to industrial instrumentation is required.
- Experience with Smart Instrumentation management software is beneficial.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) is essential.
- Candidate must be able to meet physical requirements of the role and pass a hair drug test.
- A valid driver's license is required.
- Minimal travel (10% or less) may be involved.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous supervisory experience is highly desirable.
- Detailed experience in Instrument design is preferred.
- Refinery work experience is advantageous.
- FS Engineer (TUV Certification) is preferred.

Pay Range: $141,300.00 - $212,000.00 Salary
