(Circuit Card Assembly / Electronics Manufacturing)

Location: Chelmsford, MA

Position Type: Direct Hire

Reports to: Engineering Manager

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Manufacturing & Process Engineer II with a strong background in Circuit Card Assembly (CCA) and electronics manufacturing. This role provides hands‑on technical ownership of manufacturing processes, with a focus on process development, continuous improvement, quality, and yield optimization. The engineer will serve as a key technical interface between Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and external customers.

This position is ideal for an engineer who enjoys being close to the factory floor and driving improvements from NPI through sustained production.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide manufacturing and process engineering support for circuit card assembly (PCBA) and electromechanical products
  • Own and optimize SMT and through‑hole assembly processes, including:
  • Solder paste printing
  • Pick‑and‑place
  • Reflow, wave, and/or selective soldering
  • Develop, document, and maintain:
  • Routings and travelers
  • Bills of Material (BOMs)
  • Work instructions, assembly instructions, and visual aids
  • Support New Product Introduction (NPI) activities including process definition, line setup, and first article builds
  • Lead DFM / DFA reviews with internal teams and customers (pre‑ and post‑release)
  • Analyze production metrics (yield, defects, scrap, rework) and implement corrective actions using root cause analysis tools
  • Investigate and resolve manufacturing issues related to solder defects, component placement, process variability, and test failures
  • Serve as technical liaison between Engineering, Program Management, Manufacturing, Quality, and customers
  • Review and implement engineering change orders (ECOs) and customer change notices
  • Support RFQs by reviewing scope of work, labor estimates, materials, and special process requirements
  • Evaluate estimated vs. actual costs and update routings and standards accordingly
  • Develop or support tooling, fixtures, stencils, and test aids as needed
  • Ensure compliance with internal procedures and applicable industry standards

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Manufacturing, Electrical, Mechanical, or related discipline) or equivalent hands‑on experience
  • 6+ years of experience in electronics manufacturing, preferably in a contract manufacturing environment
  • Strong hands‑on knowledge of Circuit Card Assembly (CCA / PCBA)
  • Ability to read and interpret:
  • Electrical schematics
  • Assembly drawings
  • Parts lists
  • Engineering change notices
  • Experience creating and maintaining manufacturing documentation
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools
  • High attention to detail and organizational skills

Preferred / Nice‑to‑Have Experience

  • Hands‑on experience with:
  • AOI, X‑ray, ICT, or functional testing
  • IPC standards (IPC‑A‑610, J‑STD‑001)
  • Experience supporting high‑mix, low‑to‑medium volume production
  • Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement experience
  • ERP/MRP system experience
