Position Overview
We are seeking a licensed Professional Mechanical Engineer (PE) with strong HVAC design experience to join our engineering team. The primary purpose of this role is to lead HVAC and mechanical infrastructure design for commercial retrofit and new construction projects, ensuring systems meet performance, code, and client requirements. The ideal candidate will be skilled in HVAC design and familiar with mechanical systems, able to perform load calculations, produce construction documents, review piping and ductwork designs, and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead HVAC and mechanical systems design for commercial projects, from concept through construction documentation and closeout.
- Prepare and review heating and cooling load calculations, equipment selection, and system sizing to achieve energy efficiency and code compliance.
- Produce and review construction drawings and specifications for HVAC, ductwork, piping, and mechanical infrastructure using AutoCAD and/or Revit MEP.
- Ensure all designs comply with applicable HVAC codes, energy codes, and industry standards; prepare code compliance narratives and permit submission packages.
- Perform engineering calculations, equipment schedules, and technical coordination with electrical, structural, and architectural teams.
- Provide engineering oversight during construction, respond to RFIs, review submittals, and conduct site visits to verify installation aligns with design intent.
- Mentor junior engineers and technicians; review their work for technical accuracy and adherence to standards.
- Coordinate with clients, contractors, and authorities having jurisdiction to resolve design issues and support project delivery on schedule and budget.
- Participate in value engineering and energy optimization efforts to reduce lifecycle costs and improve system performance.
Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in Mechanical Engineering ad have stamped construction and technical documents.
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- 5+ years of experience in HVAC design and mechanical systems engineering, with commercial project experience and retrofit work highly desirable.
- Demonstrated proficiency in HVAC design fundamentals, including heating, cooling, ventilation, ductwork, piping, and mechanical infrastructure.
- Experience performing load calculations and equipment selection using industry tools and standards.
- Strong working knowledge of HVAC and energy codes, permitting processes, and code compliance documentation.
- Proficient with AutoCAD and/or Revit MEP; experience producing construction documents and BIM coordination.
- Familiarity with energy codes, ASHRAE standards, and sustainable design best practices.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams and interacting with clients and contractors.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
