Job Description:

The Robotics and Digital solutions (RAD) group, part of the Johnson & Johnson family of companies, is recruiting for a Mechanical Engineer - R&D Robotics for the Ottava R&D Team. This position is located in Santa Clara, CA.

What We Do:

The Ottava R&D team envisions a future for robotic intervention that is targeted, minimally invasive, and personalized. Building upon a deep understanding of patient and physician needs, we are developing a platform for the next evolution of soft-tissue robotic care.

Who We Are:

We are a team of mechanical, electrical, mechatronics, robotic controls, software, and clinical engineers who are passionate about improving patient care. The team includes a wide range of experience levels from junior engineers to industry experts. We follow an iterative design approach to product development that requires us to collaborate closely across clinical, capital hardware, and instruments & accessories teams. We value autonomy and empower each other to take action while remaining a supportive and closely knit team. We take pride in our culture and are committed to building an environment that is inclusive and promotes diversity of thought through varied experiences and backgrounds.

You:

This Mechanical Engineer will work with other members of the Research & Development design team to craft complex mechanisms, structural but lightweight assemblies, motor driven actuators, and motion transmissions. This role is responsible for conceptual and detailed CAD design, drawings, related documentation, and design specifications. Your work will be focused on deriving and formalizing innovative designs based on user needs and product requirements. Key team collaborators include electrical engineering, robot controls, system integration, testing, external vendors, and internal manufacturing groups. As a member of the R&D Mechanical Engineering Team, you will contribute to the development of a complex robotic medical platform. For a self-motivated engineer, this is a unique opportunity to jump into the middle of a fast-paced environment passionate about quantitative results and delivery of a platform that exceeds expectations.

Performance Objectives and Responsibilities:

  • Create electromechanical prototypes which can be used to inform and drive design decisions.
  • Provide hands-on troubleshooting, process, and manufacturing assistance in support of a rapid development cycle.
  • Design safe, robust, and reliable solutions utilizing engineering methods with good documentation processes and releasing design documentation through an ECO process.
  • Ability and willingness to work through all phases of product development from conceptualization to mass production.
  • Must be capable of working independently and in cross departmental engineering teams.
  • Be a positive, collaborative team member with a good honest work ethic.

Required Experience and Skills:
