Who this role is best for

Best suited to mid-level design engineers with full-stack design and coding skills, working remotely in EMEA/East Coast with monthly in-person collaboration in Paris.

Best fit for

  • Design engineers who bridge visual craft and production-quality code across multiple surfaces.
    — “Visual craft; high polish, typographic sensitivity, and attention to detail across product and brand contexts.
  • Systems thinkers who design for ripple effects across product, marketing, and brand.
    — “Systems thinker: you see how decisions in one surface affect another and design accordingly.
  • Developers comfortable in command-line workflows and version control as their natural habitat.
    — “Genuine familiarity with developer workflows; version control, local environments, the command line, deployment pipelines.

Things to consider

  • Monthly 3-day in-person collaboration in Paris is required, with optional extended stays.
    — “We get our fix of in-person collaboration (and croissants) in Paris each month for 3 days.
  • Role demands high visual bar ownership across all company surfaces, not just product.
    — “Hold the visual bar across the team. Your taste and judgment should be raising the standard for everything around you.

How to stand out

  • Showcase projects where you defined and scaled a design system, not just maintained one.
    — “Experience building design systems, not just maintaining them, but defining the pipeline and getting others to adopt it.
  • Highlight concrete examples of reusable frontend code that others built upon.
    — “Write reusable, production-quality frontend code: components and systems others can build on, not one-off pages.
  • Demonstrate deep familiarity with developer tools, not just general product design.
    — “Deep experience designing for developer tools specifically, not general consumer or enterprise products.

About the role

ABOUT POOLSIDE

In this decade, the world will create Artificial General Intelligence. There will only be a small number of companies who will achieve this. Their ability to stack advantages and pull ahead will define the winners. These companies will move faster than anyone else. They will attract the world's most capable talent. They will be on the forefront of applied research, engineering, infrastructure and deployment at scale. They will continue to scale their training to larger & more capable models. They will be given the right to raise large amounts of capital along their journey to enable this. They will create powerful economic engines. They will obsess over the success of their users and customers.

Poolside exists to be this company: to build a world where AI will be the engine behind economically valuable work and scientific progress. We believe the fastest way to reach AGI lies in accelerating software development itself, by reshaping the developer experience with agentic systems, coding assistants, and the frontier models that power them. We deploy these systems directly into the development environments of security-conscious enterprises.

ABOUT OUR TEAM

We were founded in the US and have our home there, but our team is distributed across Europe and North America. We get our fix of in-person collaboration (and croissants) in Paris each month for 3 days, always Monday-Wednesday, with an open invitation to stay the whole week. We also do longer off-sites once a year.

Our team is a multidisciplinary blend of research, engineering, and business experts. What unites us is our deep care for what we build together. We’re in a race that requires hard work, intellectual curiosity, and obsession; to balance this intensity, we’ve assembled a team of low ego and kind-hearted individuals who have built the special culture Poolside has. By building collaboratively and with intention, we create a compounding effect that moves the entire company forward towards our mission: reaching AGI through intelligence systems built for software development.

ABOUT THE ROLE

This is a role for someone who holds the bar across everything Poolside puts into the world. You'll work across the full surface area of our experience. Product, marketing, systems, and brand; bringing the same level of craft and attention to a complex product flow as you do to a polished marketing page. You'll write reusable, production-quality code alongside your design work, contributing components and systems that the engineering team actually builds on. You'll partner closely with other Designers and Design Engineers on brand and external surfaces, and with Product Engineering on implementation.

The scope here is intentionally wide. We're a small team with cross-pollinating skillsets, and this person raises the quality of everything around them. Not by owning a narrow lane, but by holding a high visual bar across the whole company and knowing how decisions in one surface ripple into another.

YOUR MISSION

To set the experiential standard for Poolside, ensuring everything we ship, across every surface, reflects the quality of the intelligence behind it.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Own the quality and consistency of Poolside's design across product, marketing, brand, and systems surfaces.
  • Build and evolve our design system; not just a component library, but a design pipeline that scales with the company.
  • Write reusable, production-quality frontend code: components and systems others can build on, not one-off pages.
  • Partner with Design Engineers on external-facing surfaces, ensuring brand and marketing reflect the same bar as the product.
  • Collaborate with Product Engineering to bring design system work into production and keep it alive as the product evolves.
  • Hold the visual bar across the team. Your taste and judgment should be raising the standard for everything around you.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Visual craft; high polish, typographic sensitivity, and attention to detail across product and brand contexts. You produce work that looks as good as it functions.
  • Experience designing across the full experience of a company: product, marketing, design systems, and brand. Not a specialist in one.
  • Proficiency producing reusable, clean frontend code. Components and systems, not just one-off pages.
  • A genuine history of building with code: scripts, tools, personal projects shipped from scratch. You can speak concretely to what you built and why.
  • Genuine familiarity with developer workflows; version control, local environments, the command line, deployment pipelines. Not as a curiosity, but as your natural habitat.
  • Deep experience designing for developer tools specifically, not general consumer or enterprise products.
  • Experience building design systems, not just maintaining them, but defining the pipeline and getting others to adopt it.
  • Systems thinker: you see how decisions in one surface affect another and design accordingly.

PROCESS

  • Intro call with one of our Designers
  • Design interview with a Design Engineer (Brand). Come with 1–2 projects you forged, not just executed
  • Technical interview with a Product Engineer. Expect questions on how you build and think about developer workflows
  • Team fit call with the People team
  • Final interview

BENEFITS

  • Fully remote work & flexible hours
  • 37 days/year of vacation & holidays
  • Health insurance allowance for you & dependents
  • 16 weeks of flexible, full-pay parental leave
  • Well-being, always-be-learning & home office allowances
  • Company-provided equipment
  • Frequent team get togethers
  • Diverse & inclusive people-first culture
