Middle Office and Risk Analyst

Our client is a London-based commodities trading firm specialising in oil derivatives, with an additional international presence in Asia. The business operates across multiple energy markets, including crude, refined products, light ends, and petrochemicals.

The firm trades both proprietary capital and on behalf of external clients, acting as a market maker. With a dynamic and entrepreneurial environment, the company offers strong exposure across trading, risk, and operations functions.

The Role

This is an entry-level to junior position sitting within the middle office function, focused on P&L validation, trade control, and risk reporting. The role plays a key part in ensuring the integrity of trading data and supporting daily risk and compliance processes.

You will work closely with Traders, Sales, and other internal teams, requiring strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the confidence to challenge and investigate discrepancies when needed.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform daily P&L reconciliation, investigating and resolving discrepancies
• Analyse under/over reporting and identify root causes of inconsistencies
• Produce and review margin reports
• Conduct trade audits and ensure accuracy of booked transactions
• Support ad hoc reporting and data analysis requests
• Perform KYC and onboarding checks for new counterparties
• Monitor trading activity and conduct surveillance using internal systems
• Investigate anomalies in reports and clearly communicate findings to stakeholders

Requirements

• 1–2 years of professional experience post-graduation, ideally within commodities or financial markets
• Degree in Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field
• Sound understanding of derivatives, P&L, and risk concepts
• Proficiency in Python, VBA, and/or SQL
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with strong attention to detail
• Ability to interpret complex data sets and communicate insights clearly
• Confident engaging with front office stakeholders and challenging when necessary
