Description:

The University of Houston Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of

Medicine Department of Biomedical Sciences invites applications for

a Translational Scientist at the rank of Research Assistant,

Associate, or Full Professor. We are seeking an innovative

researcher to join our dynamic team during an exciting period of

growth for the College. This position offers a unique opportunity

to lead a high-impact research program in a forward-thinking,

community-focused institution that values collaborative excellence

and good institutional citizenship. Salary and rank commensurate

with experience.

The successful applicant will focus primarily on advancing a robust

research agenda while contributing to essential teaching and

service activities within the Department, College, and University.

As a key member of a growing team of faculty members and research

scientists, the candidate will be expected to secure externally

funded research grants and support pedagogy within the College. The

ideal candidate will have a proven track record of high-impact

research with expertise in translational areas such as Dementia,

Neuroscience, or Biomedical Engineering; however, we remain open to

other biomedical fields that align with our mission. We are

particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate the ability

to translate laboratory discoveries into clinical applications or

community-based health solutions and who possess experience in

leading multidisciplinary research teams.

To support this mission, the successful candidate will be provided

with dedicated lab space, with internally shared equipment, and a

generous startup package. A key component of our research expansion

is the upcoming Medical Research Building, a state-of-the-art hub

for interdisciplinary team science. The building will feature

flexible wet and dry labs, specialized behavioral and VR suites,

clinical research spaces for human trials, and medical makerspaces

for prototyping, all supported by high-performance computing and a

modern vivarium.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and sustain an independent, externally funded

translational research program in fields such as dementia,

neuroscience, biomedical engineering, or other areas of high-impact

translational science.

  • Produce high-quality scholarly works and contribute to the

scientific community.

  • Participate in the delivery of integrated biomedical science

content within a pre-clerkship, organ systems-based medical

curriculum.

  • Supervise medical student scholarly projects and research

trainees.

  • Hold membership on College of Medicine and University committees

and participate in accreditation activities.

  • Demonstrate good citizenship by fostering a collaborative and

professional environment within the college and university.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MD, DO, or PhD in a relevant field.
  • Graduate of an accredited medical school (MD or DO), if

applicable.

  • Demonstrated scholarly productivity.
  • Demonstrated potential to obtain external funding and to manage

an independent research program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of success in obtaining extramural research funding

(e.g., NIH, NSF, foundations).

  • Strong publication record in translational science, neuroscience,

dementia, biomedical engineering, or related fields.

  • Experience directing or contributing to a multidisciplinary

translational research program.

  • Demonstrated effectiveness mentoring graduate students, medical

students, or early-career researchers.

  • Experience collaborating with commercial, clinical, community, or

engineering partners.

Applicants must have a PhD and/or MD/DO with outstanding

credentials in biomedical research, bioengineering, medical

physics, computational biology, or related health science fields

and a demonstrated track record of scholarly productivity. Although

candidates at all levels will be considered, we primarily

anticipate an appointment at the Assistant/Associate Professor

level for this position. The College is currently in the formal

process of implementing a tenure system, and the successful

candidate will be uniquely positioned to apply for a tenure-track

role as this framework is established.

Applicants must have a PhD and/or MD/DO from an accredited

institution. Official transcripts are required for faculty

appointment and will be requested upon selection of the final

candidate(s). Physician applicants must possess an unrestricted

Texas Medical License and board certification in their specialty.

While exceptions may be considered, approval must be obtained from

the Vice Dean of Education and/or the Dean of the College of
