About the Role:

The P&C NERC Compliance engineer will be responsible for performing and/or supervising/managing various Protection & Control, and NERC Compliance activities, studies, tests, system modelling, and other compliance related matters. The ideal candidate brings experience in power generation, NERC compliance, system analysis in medium and high voltage domains (up to 345KV), relay protection-schemes, substations, SCADA & HMI. Renewable energy experience (Wind & Solar) is highly valuable, but not mandatory. This role reports to the Director, Electrical Engineering & Compliance.

The Company follows a hybrid work model, with employees in the office from Tuesday through Thursday.

Job Requirements:

  • This position is responsible for electrical engineering support for NERC compliance, operations, and project work (OPEX and CAPEX), including potentially high complexity and dollar value activities; requiring broad knowledge of electrical engineering.
  • Responsible for completion, modelling, and testing, and reporting for NERC and market compliance, though management of contractors, and/or directly hands-on.
  • Responsible for power system protection & control analysis, design modifications, and optimization for purpose of compliance activities, system reliability improvements, design modifications for purpose of performance improvement, as well as failure root-cause-analysis.
  • Responsible for managing executing projects and activities (CAPEX & OPEX) related to power systems protection & control.
  • Responsible for analysis in support of operations during unexpected power system events (trips)
  • Solves complex problems of electrical optimization of facilities, and provides guidance to junior engineers and field staff.
  • Able to work autonomously or and in team environments.
  • Participates in engineering department planning objectives

Qualifications:

  • Technical understanding of Substation Equipment, Electrical Power Generation, Power Systems, P&C, SCADA, NERC Compliance, single line diagrams, protection system coordination - specialist level knowledge in one or more of these topics.
  • Familiarity with PSCAD, PSSE modeling tools, and compliance standards / requirements such as MOD-32/25/26/27, PRC-024, PRC-019, PRC-026 is an asset.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy operations, best practices and industry safety standards
  • Minimum of 4 years of electrical engineering experience in the domain of P&C, NERC compliance, Power Systems, Substations, MV & HV
  • Must have a high aptitude for technical learning, information assimilation, analytical and problem solving skills, noting there is not an expectation that the individual will be an expert in all areas of power generation.
  • Must have strong communication skills for the purpose of sharing and transferring critical developed expertise to others as needed, as well as communicating and defending opinions, recommendations, and decisions.
  • Must be disciplined, as often the role is self-guided and self-managing with challenging performance expectations and measures.
  • Must have a basic understanding of worker and public safety issues and environmental regulations.
  • Engineer, Licensed P.Eng in a North American Jurisdiction, or equivalent and/or eligible for licensure with experience to be gained in this position.
  • Able to work / support Canadian and US based power-generation facilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams); intermediate Excel skills required.
  • Occasional travel (air, rail, automobile) between Canadian and U.S. office locations may be required (10% travel).
  • Must hold a valid driver's license from a jurisdiction in USA or Canada and the ability to rent vehicles on the corporate account.

Typical hiring range for this position is between $100,000 to $135,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications. The Company offers annual bonus, group benefits and RSP program.
