Job Description

Principal Associate, Strategic Investments Group - Co-Lending and Credit Insurance Partnerships

The Strategic Investments Group (SIG) creates and runs partnerships that connect Capital One’s Commercial Bank with institutional capital to expand our lending capabilities and make Capital One more relevant to customers. Since 2016 SIG has been at the forefront of US banks creating numerous partnerships and risk transfer programs that currently cover over $10B in Capital One assets and are key competitive tools of the bank. At the heart of SIG’s initiatives, the team sources prospective financing opportunities - from both within Capital One and from its investor partners - and creates innovative solutions for our customers by combining the benefits of both bank capabilities and institutional capital.

Summary:

SIG’s Co-Lending and Credit Insurance Desk is a small and highly effective team that provides alternative distribution solutions to complement our front end originations and capital markets teams seeking to compete in the lending market with larger hold sizes. The team was formed in 2020 and manages established and new relationships with asset managers and insurance companies, and continues to experience significant growth in deal and partnership activity. This role will be responsible for helping to operate and scale both our existing as well as our newer Co-Lending and Credit Insurance partnerships. The associate will directly report to the Head of the Co-Lending and Credit Insurance Desk and work directly with a team of high-performing associates. The role will also closely interact with SIG leadership, senior originators, internal and external underwriting teams, insurers and insurance brokers, as well as numerous functional partners across our Commercial Bank to provide an especially high amount of visibility for a role at this level.

This role’s primary responsibilities will be:

  • To facilitate post-close portfolio activity that requires transaction or credit updates, incremental commitments, votes or approvals from our partners,
  • To coordinate and support the distribution or referral of balance sheet risk on individual corporate and commercial real estate loans for credit insurance with insurers or for syndication and assignment to our 3rd party lending partners,
  • To coordinate with workout teams to understand restructuring situations and process any insurance claims that may arise in our portfolio, and
  • To support and drive projects to automate or improve the technology and reporting infrastructure of our products and partnerships.

This is an exciting opportunity for a growth-oriented insurance, lending or capital markets professional to bring his/her unique set of skills and relationships to a dynamic team that rarely has openings.

Responsibilities:

  • Drive post-close incremental commitment requests for our corporate lending partnerships from internal originations, risk and capital markets teams, directly coordinating with external partners, insurers and insurance brokers to determine partner eligibility and potential hold sizes
  • Monitor an established portfolio of loans with credit insurance for performance deterioration, amendment activity, or potential claims, coordinating notices and votes between our deal teams and external insurance underwriters and brokers
  • Lead team’s coordination efforts for internal deal team referrals to our external real estate and equipment finance partners
  • Support Senior Desk associates and provide surge capacity for new deal activity in our corporate lending partnerships, with opportunity to increase scope with experience
  • Ensure diligence materials and amendment requests are shared with partners where necessary
  • Review and ensure accurate portfolio and pipeline data infrastructure
  • Assist in coordinating partner closing processes with Senior Manager peers, Head of Co-Lending and Credit Insurance Desk, external legal counsel and operations, ensuring strong supporting documentation with each transaction
  • Drive infrastructure projects to enable continued scale for established and new partnership programs in addition to supporting ad hoc internal and external partner requests
  • Coordinate insurance claims processes
  • Work with Team Leader to prepare presentations for internal and external stakeholders for strategy updates, business updates and other ad hoc presentations
  • Ensure all responsibilities are always balanced and well-managed while maintaining a client first focus
  • Navigate across a large organization, working collaboratively with cross-functional teams, and proactively maintaining transaction-level momentum

  • Bachelor's Degree or Military Experience
  • At least 2 years experience in Corporate Banking or Insurance

Preferred Qualifications:
